My dog's Vetsulin shot wasn't right. Should I give more insulin?

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 40 lbs

I have a dog on Vetsulin twice a day after eating. He normally urinates less than 10 seconds. I consider urination > 10 seconds a problem with glucose. After eating and insulin tonight he urinated about 15 seconds. Then repeated the 15 second urination about 5 minutes later. Seems like I did not perform the injection properly. What do I do now? Wait until the next meal and give a normal dose of Vetsulin? Thank you

Yes, I would just wait and resume normal insulin dosing at his next meal. It's risky to try and "top off" a partial dose (if he didn't get the whole thing for some reason), so better to just pick up with his next normal dose and go from there. A single skipped or lower-than-normal insulin dose should not cause any serious harm.

If the increased urination continues, then I would talk to your veterinarian as he may need to have his glucose levels rechecked and his insulin dose adjusted.

I would wait about 12 hours after his last dose of insulin. I would also make sure he eats something before giving the insulin at that time. If you are not going to be up at the 12 hour mark I would recommend holding off the insulin until tomorrow. If you give the insulin now you risk his glucose going to low even if he just ate. The best way to proceed now is to give Spike his regular amount of insulin when it is due the next time. From what you are reporting this episode should not have affected his kidneys negatively, as usually it is the very high blood sugar levels that cause kidney damage. I suggest giving him the regular insulin dose tomorrow with his food given, and then check blood glucose level approx. 6 hours after the dose of insulin was given.

Just keep him on his normal feeding and exercise routine. His blood sugar will be elevated without the insulin but a couple days should not be that huge of a problem. What you may notice is a temporary recurrence of signs (such as excess thirst and urination), but is not life threatening. If you see him acting ill though you should take him to an ER clinic immediately.

Unfortunately this is something that can easily happen. Since there is a possibility that TobyToo got a little bot of insulin, I would be afraid to give another shot. So just treat this as if he had his insulin shot and give him the next injection when it is due. By the way, if you pull up a fold of skin and inject into that it may be easier to feel when you are in.

Yes, he should get some insulin now. The usual starting dose is about ¼ unit per pound of body weight. Thus, a 20 lb. dog would start at 5 units; 40 lb. at 10 units, and so on. So at 29 pounds, he should get about 7 units of insulin. Check his glucose again in a few hours and see where he is to make sure he's not getting too low. If he does get really low, you can help bring it back up by giving some honey or Karo syrup.
