My puppy has a mark after playing outdoors. Is it an insect bite?

Hi there, Is this dark red circle flat and not swollen? If so, it appears most similar to a black fly bite. You can look these up on google images. They are generally benign but some dogs benefit from anti itch medications. If its warm to touch or swollen, or she seems to develop more of these bruises even while indoors, those would be reasons to have Stevie seen by her vet to ensure it's not something more serious. I see that this question was posted 1 day ago, but can't see the exact time, so it's possible you've already been to the vet! In general for skin issues, if it's not actively bleeding, not causing intense pain, and not rapidly worsening, and not accompanied by other issues (such as vomiting, extreme lethargy), then it can wait until the next day for evaluation. I hope you and Leo have gotten all sorted out!

Based on these photos, it does appear there is a little dot at the center of the lump, and you could be correct that this is some sort of insect bite. I would watch this lump over the next week or two. As long as it is slowly getting smaller, then I would not be concerned, however, if there is no change over the next couple of weeks, or it is getting bigger, firm, red, or painful, then seek veterinary attention. That looks like an insect bite that may be infected for it to have a focal light spot in the center. If she seems fine otherwise you can opt to keep an eye on it and make sure it continues to improve. If it does get bigger, if she becomes lame, acts sick, refuses to eat or starts vomiting or has diarrhea, get her in to see your vet right away as there may be something more serious going on.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is difficult to say from the pictures what this could be for sure. My suspicion is that this is a local reaction to an insect bite or sting. Other trauma might include something that poked into the skin and cause irritation. I would clean the are with diluted Betadine in sterile saline (a light brown mixture should result) and monitor. If it is worsening I would have a vet examine this. You can also give adult benadryl. The dose is typically 1mg per 1 lb of bodyweight every 12 hours. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Most often when we see a lesion like this on the skin it is the result of an insect bite, in particular a biting fly such as a black fly. If your dog is acting normally then I would just monitor the area. If the lesion grows in size, becomes raised or oozes a discharge, or your dog develops many more lesions, becomes lethargic or very itchy a vet exam is recommended.
