My dog was injured, having seizures & won't eat. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

My 8 month old beagle was in an accident with another dog. We weren't there and we told he got knocked out. Resulting in bloody nose, swollen face, loss of motor function and won t eat or drink still 2 days after. Also having seizures that last a couple minutes at a time. No vets around us see walk ins or are closed.

Hello, and I'm so sorry to hear about Bud. His condition sounds very serious and he needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Seizures that go untreated can result in permanent brain damage, while not eating or drinking are a sign he is in pain, and will result in weakness and dehydration. It sounds like he sustained some head trauma, possibly a concussion. Is there an emergency clinic that you can go to? They are typically open 24-7.

Because Bud's condition is serious, the vet may recommend hospitalization along with diagnostic tests such as x-rays and blood work. At minimum he needs medication for pain and antibiotics to help heal his injuries. The vet may also recommend referral to a neurologist. If he is not eating and drinking, there is a reason. Furthermore, it is easy for him to become dehydrated. He could be experiencing pain somewhere such as his neck, back or joints. He could have inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract or be experiencing a systemic disease that is making refuse his food. His veterinarian will gain information based on his physical exam as to what his problem may be. From there either medications will be prescribed or he will require further testing. In the meantime, try to encourage him to take in some water. Some dogs will even take ice cubes. I hope this information helps!

I'm going to assume that your question is what should you do about this, and I'm going to assume that this is a dog. Without knowing the cause of the seizures - i.e. Epilepsy, brain tumor, menigitis, etc - it's really difficult to know what could be going on. Most epileptics will continue to have seizures occasionally, even on anti-seizure meds. But what you're describing - lack of appetite, no water consumption, and not acting normally - are all signs of a possibly serious problem. So please take your dog to see a vet as soon as possible.

Poor Elijah! He does have to see a vet immediately. It sounds like he was attacked or got into a fight, and it's serious he can't eat or drink, and is bleeding out of his mouth. There is nothing you can do for him at home, he needs immediate medical attention. My dog was attacked. He's not drinking and bumping. Is it serious?

I'm sorry to hear that Mylo was attacked! It is concerning that he is not drinking, moving his head abnormally and bumping into objects. This could be occurring due to head trauma or neurologic deficits caused by the attack, and some of these signs can take a longer time to present if there is swelling in the brain. I do recommend taking Mylo back to the vet for another exam to reassess his neurologic function and cranial nerve responses. The vet may also need to give him fluids since he is not drinking and puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration than adult dogs. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

I am so sorry that your pet is not only ill but that you were brushed off by the emergency person when seeking help. That is quite unheard of also disturbing that someone would laugh at your pets misfortune. I am not sure your pets breed or age, but you should call another emergency vet in the area and get him seen right away. In fact if they are open, I would not wait and just take him in to be seen. He either has a really bad case of stress related hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, a coagulation disorder, pancreatitis, or a toxin exposure as the cause of his symptoms. I hope your furry friend gets the treatment he deserves quickly and is able to make a full recovery. Best of luck!

My dog is weak, only drinking water, and having seizures. What to do?

I would take Milo into a vet now. He sounds quite sick, and he needs immediate veterinary attention. If he seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near his mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor him at all times during the seizure to ensure that he cannot hurt himself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately Best of luck.
