My dog won't eat or drink and is unresponsive. What should I do?

My dog is not eating and won't drink water. Not responsive to food or water. What do I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. I am sorry to hear that he is not eating or drinking. You will need to schedule an appointment with his veterinarian, ideally today. If he is not eating and drinking, there is a reason. Furthermore, it is easy for him to become dehydrated. He could be experiencing pain somewhere such as his neck, back or joints. He could have inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract or be experiencing a systemic disease that is making refuse his food. His veterinarian will gain information based on his physical exam as to what his problem may be. From there either medications will be prescribed or he will require further testing. In the meantime, try to encourage him to take in some water. Some dogs will even take ice cubes. I hope this information helps!

Unfortunately without doing some basic tests it will be impossible to help you, he might be suffering from hyperthyroidism, lymphoma or other cancer. a blood test would be the very least that needs to be done. If money is an issue please contact a cat charity in your area of living, they can help with costs of treatment in many cases. Many vets also have payment plans, and there is also a credit company that will land you money toward vet bills ( https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/) .

The signs you describe are very vague and common to many illnesses - weakness, reduced appetite increased thirst are not enough to diagnose any specific condition. Please contact your vets office for clarification of what was found during the physical exam and to confirm what treatments have been prescribed. You are entiltled to seek a second opinion from an alternatve vet if you feel he is not responding or is still unwell

Sudden loss of appetite and thirst is common to many illness, injuries and fevers - I wold recommend a full check up by your vet to diagnose the underlying cause if she is unwilling or unable to drink as she will easily become very dehydrated if not treated in time and the symptoms are too vague to guess what might be causing them

I'm wondering if you mean you gave Buddy a dewormer. You can see some stomach upset from giving a deworming treatment, as it can be due to the dead worms moving through the GI system, but it shouldn't stop him from eating completely. I would be concerned that he could have a medical illness causing him to not eat and have deceased drinking. Because of this, I would have him checked out by a vet right away. Best of luck.

A dog may stop eating for a wide variety of reasons, some of which are due to medical conditions and others that may be more behavioral. Medical problems such as gastrointestinal viruses, intestinal obstructions, parasites, or kidney disease, among other conditions, can lead to this problem. Other dogs may become disinterested in their food and may prefer a different flavor of food, or the taste of the food may have changed due to the container in which it is stored. If your dog is still active and playful, you can try to tempt them to eat with a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to either their original diet or to a new food. (Any time you change diets, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over 5-7 days.) If this is unsuccessful or if your dog is lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, a visit to the veterinarian is in order. The veterinarian will be able to perform a physical exam as well as any necessary diagnostic tests to try to get to the bottom of this issue so that proper treatment can be started.

My dog won't eat/drink, has bad breath, licks lips. What should I do?

It sounds as Buddy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti nausea injection (lip licking is a sign of nausea), antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

My puppy won't eat his food, only drinks water. Is he healthy?

Kudos to you for being so concerned about Buddy! :-) As long as Buddy is at a healthy body weight, he is likely getting plenty to eat. To make sure he seems to be a healthy body weight, run your hands over his ribs to assure that you can easily feel (but not see) his ribs. You should also be able to see a "waistline" when looking down at him. I can't see Buddy well enough in the pictures to help you determine if his weight is appropriate. Some dogs are naturally picky or have been conditioned to eat less dog food because they know that treats or more appealing food is coming. I always recommend offering food twice daily as you are doing, but some dogs choose to only eat once a day. Avoid midday treats or snacks to try to train Buddy to eat at mealtimes and continue avoiding table scraps. Make sure that Buddy is being offered a high quality kibble (I generally recommend Science Diet, Purina ProPlan or Royal Canin foods) and if you choose to switch foods, be sure to do so by mixing old and new foods together over 5-7 days. If the canned diet seems to tempt him to eat, you can continue mixing a bit in with the kibble, but I would recommend avoiding Beneful and looking for a higher quality canned option.
