My dog has an infected hole from a growth. Can I use Polysporin?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

I found a brown bean shape growth. It came off and now my dog has a hole (like a boil) in the area where the growth was. The area looks infected is it ok to put polysporin on a wound?

Hi there. From your picture it looks like it was a tick that was filled with blood. I would make sure the entire tick was removed from Dexter and that the mouthpiece isn’t still in his skin. I would recommend putting Neosporin on it for now as long as it’s not somewhere where he will just lick it off. I would also recommend applying a flea and tick preventative in case there are more that you can’t see. Keep a close eye on Dexter and make sure he acts normally because ticks can spread disease. Things to watch for in the next couple of weeks are Lack of appetite, not feeling well, acting painful when walking. If you notice any of the signs I would recommend him going to the vet.

I would not advise the use of neosporin or any other topical ointment as it is a bit deep and those are not indicated in internal tissue. My dog's sore isn't healing. When should I take him to the vet?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dexter. If the wound is not healing, I recommend that he sees his veterinarian early next week if he is otherwise acting normal. I cannot tell from the picture if there is a scab across the wound versus material that can be expressed out of the opening. If you can express material out, he could have a ruptured cyst. These are common small growths on or within the skin of a dog. They can rupture open though and become infected. Based on his exam, the veterinarian will decide if he needs any medication. In the meantime, do not let him lick or scratch the area. I hope this information helps!

At least on this picture this looks very superficial and it is very likely that it will resolve on its own as long as the area is kept nice and clean. If you have noticed Dexter licking at it, an e-collar to prevent that would be ideal. Otherwise, this should continue getting better. If no major improvement in the next week or so, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment which may include antibiotics. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog had a hard black growth removed, leaving a hole. Cyst or tick?

While I can't tell for sure from the picture, I believe this may be dried discharge from a cyst. Poodles and other breeds with continually growing hair are more prone to sebaceous cyst formation. Sometimes these cysts can rupture and push out a thick cheesy material. When this material dries it can form a crust that when removed reveals the inside of the cyst. I would keep the area clean and monitor for any signs of redness, continued discharge or swelling. Do not allow Pogo to lick at the area and if it becomes inflamed he should be seen by your veterinarian.

This looks like a fairly small, superficial abrasion so I think it would probably okay to continue to monitor it. If MK is licking the area I wouldn't recommend using Polysporin. If the wound seems to be getting larger or you notice an increase in redness, swelling or discharge you should have your vet examine it.

My dog has a red ring with a black spot. Could it be a tick?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Just keep a close eye on the area. A little Neosporin applied to the spot twice a day would be a good idea. Not all tick bites will cause disease, so just watch over the next 10 -14 days any signs of illness in Tobi. This would include lethargy, loss of appetite, reddened eyes. Take care.
