My dog has an open wound on her back. Is it a tick or infected?

It is not a tick for sure. It looks more like a skin wound/scab, local skin or folicle infection. You should try and clean it with salty water twice a day for 2-3 days. If it doesn't go away, please take Donni to your regular vets.

That almost looks like it is some sort of infected wound or possibly a ruptured cyst. Certain types of flies will also lay their eggs on the skin and the larva will migrate into the skin. It's difficult to tell from your pictures what this is, but it does appear that it may be infected. Even if she can't reach it to lick or chew, if it is itchy or painful she may be scratching it with a foot or even rubbing on the ground or furniture to scratch it. I would recommend a vet visit to assess the spot and determine what it may be. If it is getting larger it could be a mass or growth, or infection/hotspot that requires antibiotics. The vet may clip away the hair from the lesion and possibly do a cytology to find out what type of cells or infection are present. From there appropriate treatment can be determined.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). It does not specifically look like a tic bite. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. It's difficult to tell the extent of the injury (the photo is quite blurry), but the wound appears rather deep. Here are my recommendation: 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the lesions. 2) Flush the wound with clean water a syringe using high pressure. Use a clean cloth to gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing. Do not use any antiseptics like iodine, because this can be irritating and delay healing. 3) Apply an antibacterial cream to the wound and lightly bandage the wound.
