My dog hurt his leg and won't walk. Should I take him to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 1.2 lbs

Hi, my 2 yr old teacup Pomeranian has hurt his leg this afternoon & now won't walk on it.. while I was putting the grocery shopping away he was sitting on a plastic bag and got his leg tangled in the handle, when he started to panic when his leg was tangled I pulled the bag and he fell and yelped.. immediately he walked on it but now (a few hours later) he's not moving it at all.. both leg feel the same, his nose is still wet but he's just laying down very quietly which it very abnormal for him.

Poor Merl! It sounds like his leg is really hurting him, if he won't move it at all and doesn't want to get up and walk around. Since it sounds like he's in pain, I would recommend having him seen by a vet today if possible - he/she can do a complete orthopedic exam to check for any serious injuries, and may also take x-rays if needed. The vet can also get Merl started on some pain medication to make him feel better, since unfortunately there is nothing over-the-counter that would be safe to give him.

    Poor little Lucky! It could be he has a sore muscle. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

No, this isn't normal at all. It could be that Sonam leg was broken and that's why he won't move. It could also be that he is in severe pain. He need veterinary attention now for this. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe him pain medications if needed, and any other treatment for his symptoms. Please bring him into a vet ASAP.

If he is so painful that he is unwilling or unable to walk he really must be seen by a vet for urgent pain relief and full diagnosis of the injury. Please arrange a vet visit for assessment as soon as possible to ease his discomfort and prevent any further complications

Poor Biggie! If he is not able to put weight on the injured leg, he definitely needs to see a veterinarian as I would be concerned that he may have a fracture or dislocation. Your veterinarian can take x-rays to determine what's wrong and what treatment is needed - possible surgical repair, splinting, or rest and pain medication at home.
