Accidentally gave dog human CBD oil with avocado. Is it safe?

Unfortuantely we could never recommend and say it is ok to give your pet human medication if it is not prescribed specifically for your pet. There is too much room for human error when trying to microdose human medication to pets. Also there may be contaminants or other ingredients there that are not suitable for dogs, so it is best to use caution and stick with the pet formulated one that has been tested in pets. Also we are not legally able to prescribe CBD oils to pets in most states, so experimenting with this lies entirely on the owner and your research. The law has made it clear to us that we just don't know enough about CBD oil to competently prescribe it and educate owners on its use. With that said, there are some pet owners that say it has helped their pets with arthritis and pain, while others say it hasn't helped at all. It is still considered a supplement and is anectdotal, which means that there isn't enough research to say that it is going to be helpful for most pets and what conditions it can treat for. Any oil isn't safe because it's a fat, plus avocado shouldn't be fed to dogs anyway as it causes GI upset. You can give Ricky boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and boiled beef, do not give him anything cooked in any type of oil or seasoned. Best of luck.

Avocado itself isn't toxic, but does have a high fat content that may cause GI upset. It may be a good idea to replace Kylie's regular diet for a few meals with some boiled rice and chicken to help settle her stomach, especially if she has any minor vomiting or diarrhea after eating the "snack". Some dogs can have severe reactions from eating too much fat, such as pancreatitis. Signs of something more severe that warrant a trip to the vet ASAP include blood in the vomit or diarrhea, painful abdomen, bloated abdomen, attempting to vomit or defecate without results, or general distress/lethargy/loss of appetite. If you do see these signs, scheduling a vet visit ASAP is best.

As of yet, we have very little research on CBD oil in veterinary patients, so we cannot make any recommendations one way or the other about this product - we do not know what an appropriate dose might be, and if there are any potential health concerns or drug interactions in dogs. In addition, because it's a schedule 1 drug, it's illegal for us to prescribe or recommend.

We just don’t have much data on CBD oil and safety in pets right now. All I can say is use it cautiously if you desire and choose a product marketed for pets. If you see any abnormal symptoms at all take Cafe to the vet for evaluation. I would also discuss her old dog issues with the vet to make sure she is on any necessary medications or supplements.

You should contact your vet's office for a recommendation as we are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Your veterinarian also knows your dog and the potential risks for your dog receiving this medication. That said, if you are using this product you must read the label and dose it according to the label.
