My dog howls a lot since moving outside. Is he lonely or depressed?

Sounds like Mike may be a bit lonely or bored. If he's whining or crying whether inside or out, then increasing his exercise throughout the day or right before bed may help tire him out enough to sleep through the night instead. Leaving him with a toy to chew on, or a blanket/old shirt that smells like you may also help him relax at night and sleep better. If you've tried this and he's still howling, checking the environment for things that might be agitating him, such as a strange animal in the back yard, rodents in the yard, etc may help you find the cause of his distress.

Poor Milo! It sounds like he's lonely and bored outside by himself. Dogs are social animals, and don't do well with living outside alone. I would either consider making Milo an inside dog so that he can spend time with you and your family, or work harder at getting him an appropriate amount of exercise and mental stimulation - things like going for long walks or hikes, taking him to training classes, playing with him for at least 30 minutes each day, etc.

If Mike's paws were wet then it could be from licking them or his living conditions are too wet. I would be sure he has shelter outside from the rain. It should have a roof and a floor slightly elevated off the ground and be dry. Check his feet daily for infection. Mike is likely howling because he is lonely outside, since he can not come in be sure he gets plenty of attention and exercise. Long walks twice daily and play time outside with you. Teach him basic obedience so when he starts to howl you can instruct him to go lay down in his dog house. I hope this helps! I wish you and Mike the very best!

The howling you are describing is usually from loneliness/sadness but of course no one knows for sure. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do unless you can get the neighbor to give you the dog. As long as dogs have shelter, food and water there is nothing that animal control can do. It is sad but their hands are tied as well.

Thanks for using PetCoah. This sounds like perfectly normal behavior for a puppy. The best way to improve the behavior is to spend plenty of time exercising, playing, and working on training. Even training simple things like sit, stay, fetch, can prevent anxiety help Okuri-inu regulate his behavior and stay more calm. Also consider constructing a small run for him outside. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness Rocco is cute! Rocco is still very young! He likely misses all his litter mates. Making the crate a good place to be is your best approach. When he is out with you, leave the play pen/crate open so he can walk in and out. Give good treats and toys in the crate with the door opening. Tie the toy or rawhide chew with rope in the crate so he can't take it out to play with or eat. Teach him how to "go to his bed" which will be the crate. When he is tired pick him up and lay him in there. If you have free time snuggle with him. It will take time and like I said at 8 weeks he is very young and this is normal behavior. I hope this helps and good luck!

This is a big change for Rocco! He need time to adapt. I would suggest to let him inside till you go to bed so he doesn't see you awake within the house and doesn't get stressed because cannot interact with you or your family members. Sometimes they do not like to sleep in the brand new house, they just don't understand what changed compared to before. Add some toys and treats to make the new recovery even more comfy.
