My neighbor's dog howls when alone. Is it sad? What can I do?

Oh this is such a sad situation! You can give your local SPCA or animal control a call to do a welfare check on the puppy. This can be done anonymously, so your neighbor won't know it's you that called. I hope this helps!

This poor dog! Dogs are social creatures, so yes he will get lonely and sad. It's not a very good existence living outdoors alone all the time, but unfortunately if he's well fed and not abused, there's nothing you can do about it. It makes me sad for the dog :-(

He’s probably lonely living out there by himself when he’s been used to being in the house. I’d keep him in with you at night and sometimes in the day. He would enjoy walks outside of his fenced area also and playing with you or perhaps other dogs. That life is boring so I recommend doing more with him so he doesn’t develop behavioral problems. Poor Madge! I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Dogs can and do mourn much like people do, so it is likely that she is feeling a bit lost and afraid now that her friend is no longer there. There are a few things you can do to help with separation anxiety, including playing a soothing talk radio or TV show while you're gone, leaving a puzzle toy to distract her, going on a long walk to tire her out prior to your leaving, or having a T-shirt or blanket that smells like you or your passed away pup to cuddle with. Pheromone diffusing collars can also help by releasing a calming pheromone to help reduce stress and anxiety. If you can, coming home for breaks during the day to let her out and play with her may help reduce her anxiety. If the problems persist or do not improve, speaking with a trainer or behaviorist in your area may help. They may be able to formulate a training plan to help Madge feel a bit better and get comfortable in her new situation.

If Mike's paws were wet then it could be from licking them or his living conditions are too wet. I would be sure he has shelter outside from the rain. It should have a roof and a floor slightly elevated off the ground and be dry. Check his feet daily for infection. Mike is likely howling because he is lonely outside, since he can not come in be sure he gets plenty of attention and exercise. Long walks twice daily and play time outside with you. Teach him basic obedience so when he starts to howl you can instruct him to go lay down in his dog house. I hope this helps! I wish you and Mike the very best!

Sounds like Mike may be a bit lonely or bored. If he's whining or crying whether inside or out, then increasing his exercise throughout the day or right before bed may help tire him out enough to sleep through the night instead. Leaving him with a toy to chew on, or a blanket/old shirt that smells like you may also help him relax at night and sleep better. If you've tried this and he's still howling, checking the environment for things that might be agitating him, such as a strange animal in the back yard, rodents in the yard, etc may help you find the cause of his distress.

Poor Milo! It sounds like he's lonely and bored outside by himself. Dogs are social animals, and don't do well with living outside alone. I would either consider making Milo an inside dog so that he can spend time with you and your family, or work harder at getting him an appropriate amount of exercise and mental stimulation - things like going for long walks or hikes, taking him to training classes, playing with him for at least 30 minutes each day, etc.
