My husky wasn't walked and is hyper, howling at 2 AM. How to stop?

Any time a dog exhibits a behavior for which he is rewarded, he is likely to repeat it. If he does something and is corrected (never punished!!!) fir it AS IT IS HAPPENING ONLY, he is unlikely to repeat it. But if he goes wild at night when no one is around and he is not scolded, there is no reason for him to think that there is anything wrong with what he's doing and he will do it again. Reprimanding him after-the-fact is counterproductive, as he will not make the connection and this will only cause him to be anxious and act out more. Your best bet is to put hi in a crate for the night. He may howl and carry on, but you must ignore this (assuming that his bathroom needs, etc. have been met). After a few nights of not getting any attention at all from you when he makes a racket, he will stop and settle down in his crate. The only other option is for you to stay up at night so you can catch him at it and correct him right away. Siberians are very active, and this is not unusual (though it is extreme).

You can perhaps help with anti-anxiety medications such as Trazodone which can be used on an as needed basis. Calming treats are not particularly helpful so I am not surprised that you have not noticed a difference with those. I would encourage you to check in with your veterinarian to see if they would be able to prescribe something like that for you. Best of luck!

There could be a few different things causing this. If he's a puppy, he may need to go to the bathroom -- take him out and but don't give him attention or play time. If he's an adult, it could be pain, habit, a medical issue causing him to need to get up to go to the bathroom, or accidentally reinforcing this behavior previously with play (or even by yelling at him - if he wants to interact he doesn't really care if you're happy or unhappy during the interaction). If he's elderly, he could be starting to have dementia (canine cognitive dysfunction) or any of the adult issues. So, if he's a puppy, I recommend the above, but if he's not a pup, I'd recommend starting with a vet visit and then ignoring him at night if nothing is wrong. Good luck!

Has he always done this, or is it a new behavior? Had he been sleeping through the night at any time? The fact that he is continuing to bark, even after he's been out, tells me one of two things: either there's a sound (that you may not even be able to hear) that is disturbing or exciting him, or he has you trained to get up when he barks. To a dog who is seeking attention, any attention, even negative (such as shouting at him) is satisfying. If you are sure his bathroom needs have been met, try ignoring Wish. Do not respond in any way to his barking. Understand that, since you have reacted before, he will probably up the ante and bark more, or louder, to get the response he is used to. Don't give in!!! That will just make it harder to correct. After a few days to a week, when his behavior is not getting the desired result, he will stop. Sounds like Mike may be a bit lonely or bored. If he's whining or crying whether inside or out, then increasing his exercise throughout the day or right before bed may help tire him out enough to sleep through the night instead. Leaving him with a toy to chew on, or a blanket/old shirt that smells like you may also help him relax at night and sleep better. If you've tried this and he's still howling, checking the environment for things that might be agitating him, such as a strange animal in the back yard, rodents in the yard, etc may help you find the cause of his distress.

Thanks for using PetCoah. This sounds like perfectly normal behavior for a puppy. The best way to improve the behavior is to spend plenty of time exercising, playing, and working on training. Even training simple things like sit, stay, fetch, can prevent anxiety help Okuri-inu regulate his behavior and stay more calm. Also consider constructing a small run for him outside. This can take some time and patience - he would much rahter be playing with you then spending time on his own! With some gentle encouragement however, including chew/food toys which keep him busy (there are many puzzle feeders you can buy or DIY models such as plastic bottles with small holes for the food to come out) and a regular routine he will learn.
