Hot grease in my dog's ear: red, swollen, droopy. What should I do?

Gentle massage to the ear can help restore circulation and reduce fluid buildup. If his ear is still cold to the touch without the ice, he may need to be seen by your vet to determine if there was damage done to the tissue that may need to be treated.

Poor girl. This may be an infected mass or even a cyst. I would recommend having your vet take samples from this to be certain as to what is inside and perhaps the vet can also carefully drain it using a needle and syringe. In the meantime you can do alternating cold and warm compresses on the area for 5-10 minutes twice a day, if tolerated. Otherwise, your vet will need to get involved here to get this resolved. It appears that the opening to the ear canal is swollen, which tells me that there must be something irritating inside the ear canal. Usually this type of swelling is due too a long-standing ear infection and the swelling doesn't go down easily. You can try flushing the ear and/or putting some ear drops in there to give some relief. However, an ear that swollen may not be easily flushed and it would be best to have a veterinarian look in the ear to see exactly what the problem is. It sounds like Gypsy may have an ear infection. This is a very common condition in dogs and is treated with special ear cleaners and medication for bacteria or yeast, depending on what type of organism is causing the infection. I'd recommend taking Gypsy in to the vet right away (although an emergency clinic is unnecessary) for evaluation and to get treatment started. Best of luck!

Unfortunately this may be a so-called othematoma, ie a severe bruise of the ear flap. This will need to be drained or possibly fixed surgically by your veterinarian. It is very important that your dog does not shake the ear and make the swelling worse. You can get an e-collar which sort of keeps the ear near the head and does not allow it to flop until you can take Ozzy to the vet.

If it is swollen down inside he ear canal, this could be an ear infection. Usually, face swelling is not a commonly encountered sign of an ear infection so if his face continues to get swollen before tomorrow when you can have him evaluated by your veterinarian, consider having him evaluated tonight to make sure it is not something more concerning than an ear infection.
