Dog shaking head, painful ear, black discharge. Is it an infection?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed

Hi my dog has been shaking her head a lot. Especially at night. She seems like she is holding her right ear a bit higher than usually and when we massage her ear it is sometimes painful to her. Inside her external ear is filled with black/ brown serumen and patches that are removable.

It sounds like Gypsy may have an ear infection. This is a very common condition in dogs and is treated with special ear cleaners and medication for bacteria or yeast, depending on what type of organism is causing the infection. I'd recommend taking Gypsy in to the vet right away (although an emergency clinic is unnecessary) for evaluation and to get treatment started. Best of luck!
