My dog got hot bacon grease on her back. Is swelling normal?

Hi and thank you for the question. I do think this area looks infected. She probably suffered from a superficial minor burn. These, too can get infected. Until you can get to the vet, clean the area with a mild soap, dry thoroughly and apply a topical antibiotic. A cream type is best, but ointment would be phat as a second choice. She may need a prescription antibiotic and your vet can tell you that during the exam.

I recommend seeing a vet tomorrow to determine the cause and start treatment. In the meantime you can wash it tonight with a mild soap (like Dial) and water to relieve some of the irritation. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Molly. Grease can cause some significant burns, so be sure to examine her closely to make sure that there aren't any other blisters that are developing anywhere else. In general, for a small superficial wound, I usually recommend keeping the area clean (using warm water or an antibacterial cleaner like Bactine) and making sure that the fur around the area does not stick to the wound. Some people like to use a topical ointment like Neosporin, but you have to make sure that the wound does not have anything stick to it (like hair or dirt), so sometimes that can make things more difficult. It is important to keep Molly from licking at the wound, but legs are very difficult to bandage and if the bandage sticks to the wound, it will be painful, so it might be a better option to use an e-collar for a few days until the wound heals. If the wound is red, oozing any discharge or has an odor, it might be infected and should be examined by your veterinarian. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. This could be a burn but it is hard for me to say without seeing it in person myself. That being said, the absolute best thing to put on this is Silver Sulfadiazine cream (also called SSD cream). This is burn cream they use on humans. You should be able to buy this at any pharmacy - ask the pharmacist. Apply it 2-3 times per day until healed. DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on this - that will delay healing. If you want to clean it just use a mild soap and warm water. If he is sick or starts to act sick (not eating, lethargic, vomiting, etc) then get him to your vet right away. Burns can cause septicemia (blood infection) which is life threatening. If he is not sick you can proceed as above and hopefully this will heal up nicely. If the burns damaged the hair follicles then his hair may not grow back. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for submitting your question. I'm sorry to hear about the dog fight. I'm concerned that her face is still swollen this many days after the fight. There is a chance an abscess has now formed. Bacteria are introduced under the skin with the bite. The skin tends to heal over the wound trapping the bacteria under the skin. If the infection grows, a swelling known as an abscess forms. This will likely require antibiotics, if not surgery to heal. Your dog will need to see a veterinarian. In the meantime, you can try warm compresses at home. Apply a warm washcloth to the swollen area for 5 minutes three times per day. I hope this information!

Scar tissue can be a factor due to inflammation from healing if the injury deeper affected the muscles. You can apply ice to help with swelling until you can have your vet recheck the area to be sure. Some times further antibiotics and pain meds are needed, sometimes it is healed enough it just needs time

Yikes! That is very inflamed and I agree that it looks swollen. I recommend to get an elizabethan collar for him and make sure he wears it tonight while you are asleep and any time you are not directly watching him. Licking it may make it worse. As long as Scooter will tolerate it, you can gently wash the area with soap and rinse it well. Applying a cool (not cold) compress may also bring some relief to him. Do this a few times through out the evening. You can apply a dab of coconut oil on the area and rub it in gently. Make sure Scooter does not lick this off as it may upset his tummy.
