My pup is hospitalized for IV. Will he catch diseases from other dogs?

It's difficult for me to say how much longer it will be until Beau is home without knowing his diagnosis. It is definitely great that he is eating, but it is likely that he is no longer vomiting because he is on anti-nausea medication. His discharge from the hospital depends on his overall condition, as well as certain factors as his blood work normalizing and hydration. Your vet will be able to give you a more accurate prognosis, but in my practice, I typically like to see that blood work is returning to normal and that the dog is fully hydrated and eating on his own before being discharged.

Yes, it was the right decision, without taking him to the vet he would have zero chance to survive, now at least he stands a fighting chance. he is very young so overall i would say his chances are not very good, but you never know, with the correct treatment he might perk back up and survive this.

Yes that could help but it would depend on the underlying cause causing inappetence, lack of water intake and high temperature. If all the signs have improved after 24hours of treatment (or even less), this may have been an effective and successful therapy but for sure antibiotics therapy will need to be continued back home for more days. More clinical informations, including a definitive or presumptive diagnosis your vet is suspecting, are needed to give you more specific answers.

IV fluids are definitely recommended for a young puppy who is vomiting and is having diarrhea because it's the best way to keep them from getting dehydrated. Getting an IV catheter put in is not very painful at all, and once the needle is in the vein, giving the fluids is painless. This is the best option for keeping dehydration at bay. Dora could be subcutaneous fluids (fluids infected under the skin), but that involves a needle as well and it does not rehydrate the dog as quickly as IV fluids. I highly recommend letting the vet give her IV fluids.

His blood pressure is overpowering the flow of fliud through the IV, which causes back flow of blood into the line. If the fluid is not consistently pumping, then this is usually the cause of back flow of blood. Make sure the fluids are running all the time, and also your vet should be having the technicians checking the line every 1-2 hrs to ensure it is properly placed and the line flushed when blood flows backwards like this. Also when the fluids are not running, the line should be clamped off at the level of the catheter to ensure no back flow of blood. There isn't any serious danger here if some blood gets into the line, but it is just preferred to keep everything flowing towards the patient and not away. Plus it is more sanitary to keep blood out of the line. Best wisehs with your pet and I hope he gets over whatever illness it is that he has. Take care.
