Will my dog come home same day after IV for infection and fever?

Poor guy. Not every pet with a fever has an infection, so if the antibiotic isn’t working it’s either because there is no infection, the infection is internal, or the antibiotic is not the right kind of antibiotic for the infection. Your pet needs additional testing to sort this out and make sure we are on the right track with treatment. I would start with baseline bloodwork and a urinalysis. Best to take your pet back in to your vet or to another vet for a second opinion here so that we can get a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment based on your pets specific problem. It's difficult for me to say how much longer it will be until Beau is home without knowing his diagnosis. It is definitely great that he is eating, but it is likely that he is no longer vomiting because he is on anti-nausea medication. His discharge from the hospital depends on his overall condition, as well as certain factors as his blood work normalizing and hydration. Your vet will be able to give you a more accurate prognosis, but in my practice, I typically like to see that blood work is returning to normal and that the dog is fully hydrated and eating on his own before being discharged.

With such severe clinical signs and a low blood cont, hospital treatment is the only option. Clinics are used to treating infectious disease cases and all kennels/cages shoul be secre and safe with no leaks between patients and barrier nursing (changing gloves/washing and disinfecting all equipment) between patients to protect each of them from spreading diseases further. He should remain on an iv until he is voluntarily taking enough food/liquids to maintain his own hydration

There are many causes for fever other than bacterial infection, viruses, inflammatory diseases and autoimmune conditions can also contribute. Blood cultures are not an efficient test unless there is an overwhelming blood borne bacterial infection such as septicaemia and fecal cultures can become overwhelmed with normal/ non-disease causing bugs but if not responding, a fecal culture and microscopic exam may identify underlying causes but should be at least 5days after the last antibiotic. Specialist diets, fiber and probiotic supplement such as fortiflora could also be considered

I am so sorry your pet is so ill. She needs to have some bloodwork done at this point and possible further testing (ie urinalysis +/ x-rays) to try and find the underlying cause for her symptoms. Also another antibiotic may be needed if her infection is not responding to the current one chosen. If bloodwork has already been done then please request a private Consultation with either myself or another expert here for a more in depth conversation as to what the bloodwork results indicate for a second opinion. She may even need to be hospitalized and give IV medications until she is well enough to go home and receive oral medications readily . Hello! It sounds as if his antibiotic course may not have been long enough, but it is a little hard to know for sure, as I'm not sure what he was being treated for. It sounds like he might have had a fever. Possibly he had kennel cough, in which case, antibiotics often need to be for up to 10 days. Would you be able to take him back in to see his vet, to be checked over, and possibly to be re-started on his antibiotics? Some blood work might be helpful, too! He might need specific treatment for his eyes as well. He is adorable, and I really hope he feels better soon!

Most of the dogs will improve within 24hrs from starting the antibiotics. However, pyometra is a serious, debilitating disease and many dogs will not get back to normal (despite antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications) until they get spayed. If Ella has been on antibiotics for longer than 48hrs and she has not made any improvement, you should get her checked by your local vets again.
