Can Vitamin B supplements really stop fleas from biting my dog?

Breewer's yeast contains Vitamin B which has a repellent action for mosquitoes and maybe also fleas. However this is not realiable and it is far better to use a commercial flea preventive. Here is how you get rid of fleas: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

Please do not feed garlic to your dog, it can cause blood disease in dogs! Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The Seresto collar is a flea and tick preventative that is safe for small dogs. It is a collar that provides up to 8 months of prevention. K9 Advantix II is also safe for dogs that are 4 pounds, and is a topical medication that is applied monthly. I recommend reaching out to your local veterinarian to see what products they have for the tiny dogs :) I do not recommend using a preventative that can be purchased from a food or pet store or online, as these are NOT safe or effective for use in dogs. Omega-3 supplements are generally very safe for dogs, but should be used in moderation as they are very high in fat. I hope this is helpful!

Both of those should be safe if applied to the outer coat. However, they will not effectively prevent fleas and ticks. The best way to prevent external parasites is by using a product from your vet. There are newer products like Bravecto and Nexgard that are oral tablets that prevent fleas/ticks for 30 days. This is the best way to keep your dog parasite free.

Some supplements, such as omega-3 fish oils can be given from human supplements, however the dosage would need to be changed to a pet dosage to avoid giving too much. I would be wary of giving a human supplement as it may be formulated in the wrong doses or have other ingredients in it that could be toxic or harmful to your dog. If your vet has recommended a specific one to use, I would follow their instructions completely to avoid any complications, and have your vet monitor progress. Frontline spray should be reapplied every 30 days. I would also not be bathing your dog that often (every 2 weeks) as it may strip the skin of natural oils and lead to dry skin and irritation. If Cosmo is getting dirty in between bathing, a pet or baby wipe can be used to remove any dirt.

I do not recommend any flea or tick shampoos, these are usually not safe products and not as long lasting as more modern preventive treatment for fleas and ticks. here is the list of the best flea products on the market. Natural products just don't stand up to pests like fleas and it will leave you very frustrated as a pet owner trying to get rid of them. J would stick with a good quality flea preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica or Comfortis. Frontline has largely grown out of favor because it has been ineffective in a lot of pets. The only over the counter product that may work in my opinion is Advantix or Advantage multi. Best of luck with your flea problems and I hope you get some resolve soon.
