Why is my dog coughing after antibiotics, especially when barking?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 8 months old

He was coughing since February 2018 and I start giving him anti optic since may onwards till 15 July he was ok after 15 July I stop giving medicine and now after 14 days again he started light little xpigh it occurs only if he plan to bark on other dogs otherwise he is ok so what it is is it some other disease or normal canal cough or what it is ?

This does not sound like a typical Kennel cough, which is usually responsive to antibiotics within 3-4 days, and then goes away after stopping medication in about 10 days time. There is something else going on here, which could include any of the following: an underlying heart condition (the heart and lungs are very much involved with each other), laryngeal paralysis (causes coughing in young adult dogs but not as common as other disorders), lung parasite, fungal infection of the lungs.
You will have to get some testing done at this point to determine what the underlying cause is so that we know how best to treat Bruno moving forward. I would recommend starting with chest x-rays through your vet.

Kennel cough is usually a self limiting infection and in 1 to 2 weeks time will completely disappear without any treatment. However sometime an anti inflammatory medication and an antibiotic treatment is indicated (and probably this was your case). Your puppy should gradually improve but if you do not see an improvement in the next 24-36 hrs I recommend a recheck at your veterinarian, earlier if she is getting worse. In the meantime I suggest to use a harness instead of a collar to walk her outside to avoid pushing on the inflamed trachea and make her cough even more. My dog finished kennel cough antibiotics but still coughs, vet visit?

The cough can linger for a couple weeks. If he is otherwise acting normal than it may just take a little more time for the cough to resolve. If you notice any lethargy, anorexia, difficulty breathing, or fever than I he should definitely be rechecked.

However, other conditions unrelated to possible aspiration such as heart disease, infectious pneumonia, or heart worm infection can cause coughing as well and may just be a coincidence. If you are concerned about Chester’s cough, I recommend having him seen by his vet to rule out the conditions above. They can perform bloodwork and x-rays to make a diagnosis and begin the appropriate treatment. I hope this helps and that all is well with Chester!

My dog coughs and gags when lying down. Why isn't treatment working?

It could be kennel cough, in that case coughing could remain up to 2 weeks after treatment started, but it could be something else such as a heart condition, heartworm or a lung disease. If the cough does not resolve within a few days I would recommend having an x-ray done in order to find out what is causing this.

Why are my dogs sneezing and coughing again after antibiotics?

It sounds like they had a touch of kennel cough which is like dog flu. What can happen when treating with antibiotics that if the course finishes too soon it can make them better but hasn't completely killed the bugs then it recurs. I would visit your vet as you may need a longer course or different antibiotic.

Hi, If the dog completed his antibiotic course but still he is presenting signs of cough and breathing sounds, I would recommend to follow up with the vet. Senior dogs can show longer signs of illness in kennel cough but that needs to be monitored by a vet because if persist further investigation may be warranted.

My dog's cough returned after stopping antibiotics. What now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would assume if Danny has something infectious like a bacterial or viral pneumonia he would have improved with antibiotics or the virus would have ran it's course. The only advice in retrospect would have been to not stop the antibiotic until the cough had resolved for at least a week or 2. Some pneumonia's require 4-8 weeks of antibiotics. He definitely could have something else going on in his lungs like heart worm, heart disease, tracheal disease, a hernia, fungal pneumonia (they are very sick), cancer or allergic airway disease. If you are able try to get Danny to a vet for an exam, heart worm test and chest X-rays. I wish you the best!
