My dog won't stop coughing after pulling on his collar. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered

At about 1 o'clock this morning my dad put my dog on the lead to take him to the car as we were visiting family. Since he doesn't get out much because of bad legs he got excited and pulled really hard on his lead which caused him to start coughing because he choked himself. He has done this before and once he gets a few coughs out he's fine. However today he hasn't stopped. Every so often he has a chokey kind of cough bad it's now 8 o'clock at night. Is this anything to worry about?

It sounds like your dog may have a collapsing trachea causing the cough. It would be a good idea to use a harness instead of a collar. Your vet can also prescribe medications to help if the condition persists or becomes more frequent. A bronchodilator and cough suppressant may help.
