My dog coughed and has weak bark after leash pull. Vet or wait?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 70 lbs

My dog (Australian Shep Blue Heeler Mix) pulled hard on her leash yesterday and has been coughing intermittently since, and her bark is weak. Do i need to take her to a vet or will this get better on its own?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that this is all related to Rose pulling a lot in the leash which ultimately could have resulted in some degree of tracheitis. This usually improves on its own relatively quickly. If this does not resolve in the next 3-5 days, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. At that point, if nothing else is wrong, they may choose to start her on an anti-inflammatory medication. Good luck and have a great day!
