My dog hit her mouth on a stick & coughed blood. Does she need a vet?

Hello. It sounds like you can jut watch her overnight & see if there is any swelling, continued bleeding, either from the mouth or nose, & how comfortable she is eating & drinking in the morning. Hopefully, she will juts be a little bruised, & if she has no other problems except some swelling, there is no need to rush her in to your veterinarian. If it continues to happen then it is concerning and she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. If she was chewing on a bone the blood could be from inflammation or an injury from the bone. Monitor her and schedule an appointment with your vet if you notice anything abnormal.

I would be concerned if she develops difficulty breathing which could happen if the bleeding gets worse and she develops swelling of the airway, Based on the history and appearance of the pharynx, I would be worried that Luca may have a piece of the stick lodged behind the tissues. You need to discuss x-rays and or CT or surgery to explore the area. In summary, the safest thing to do is monitor for respiratory difficulty and take her to if the nearest veterinary emergency hospital if that happens. Otherwise, follow up with your veterinarian first thing tomorrow.

Hello. Since she is acting normal & eating, you are fine to just watch her for now. If she continues to act well over the next 24-48 hours, then she should just continue to do well. There is most likely a wound in the mouth which is why he is drooling. I highly recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check what may be wrong so that therapy can be started right away. Best of luck!

Keep an eye on her and call your vet in the morning in case she does need to be seen. She may feel worse tomorrow because of being sore, but it's still a good idea to get her checked, especially if the other dog was larger and got a good bite in or shook her.

It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours.
