My dog hit her mouth on a stick & coughed blood. Does she need a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

My dog picked up a stick and ran off with it. I saw her yelp as it apparently hit her in the mouth. Went over to her immediately and she seemed fine but coughed one time and had a little blood come up. I pried her mouth open and nothing looked lodged but I could see a little blood. Several hours later she seems totally ok and ate her food and drank water normally. I re checked her mouth and there wasn't any sign of blood. No more coughed up blood either. Just wondering about a vet visit. Thanks

Hello. I think you just keep an eye on things this evening. More than likely Remy injured some of her oral mucosa which can bleed a lot with very little damage. Since she has been acting fine & eating normally, then there is no need to rush to the vet. See how she is tomorrow & decide if a visit is necessary, but it sounds as if the injury was superficial. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
