My dog coughed blood after bone. Should I worry if she seems fine?

Possible causes are clotting or platelet issues, liver issues, cancer, heart worm disease, fungal or bacterial pulmonary disease. I would take her back for a recheck. This is a very real concern and you should have him assessed by a vet urgently. Infection, injury, heart and lung disease, parasites, clotting issues and foreign bodies could all be at play. A full physical and possibly chest xrays are recommended immediately

Yes, I would be very concerned if Bruiser gagged up a clot of blood, and I would take him into a vet now. It's not normal for a dog to cough up blood, and he could have a severe respiratory infection, a foreign body, or he could have cancer in his lungs. A vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possible x-rays to see that is causing him to gag up blood, and can treat accordingly. Please take him to a vet now.

This is most likely bleeding from the gums, which is not a serious problem. Dogs tend to naw-away slowly at these bones. When they do this, they rub their gums against the bone, which causes them to bleed - much like the way our gums can bleed when flossing. Occasionally, it can cut the gums; but again, these are usually not too serious and heal quickly. It would be good to have a look in her mouth and see if there are any glaring cuts or abnormalities. This is easier to do with two people, where one holds Bella still while opening her mouth, while the other shines a light into the mouth and inspects. If anything is of concern, then you can take a picture and post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach again, or can schedule and appointment with a vet. If nothing concerning is seen and Bella seems to be OK, then no need to worry and it's likely that she will bleed again when chewing this bone. I hope that helps and all is well with Bella.

She could certainly have irriation from the bone she ate, especially if she choked on it. Keep an eye on her and if the coughing continues for more than 48 hrs, then she should be seen by your vet for a suspected upper airway infection. As long as she is still active, eating well and using the bathroom normal, it is ok to monitor for now. I hope that Lily's cough resolves soon! Best wishes and take care. : )

I would be concerned as it may be this bone was causing a problem. It's good that he's sleeping now, and I'd keep an eye on Kobe. If you see more coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his feces, lethargy, or anorexia, then I would take him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Oh my. The red blood is very concerning. There could be some type of trauma in her throat or she could have blood coming up from her airway. A bleeding disorder, tracheal injury, canine influenza, rat poison or even pneumonia are all possible causes for this. At any rate Penny needs to see a vet right away for a full examination, oral exam and listen to her lungs.
