My dog got hit by a car. Why isn't he urinating? What should I do?

Hello there! I am so sorry to hear Boogie got hit by a car. I know how scary this must be for you. I am really concerned about Boogie based on what you are describing. Something doesn't seem quite right. If his only injury is a bruised lung he should be able to walk and urinate. I think Boogie needs to go in and see a vet ASAP. And I would recommend taking him to an ER vet today if possible. There are a few things that have me really worried. The 1st is that he received IV fluids and he isn't urinating. We often give a lot of fluids in the these situations to treat shock. This should make him make a lot of urine. If you are able to feel a very large bladder then my concern is that he might not be able to pee. This can become a life threatening situation if it were to affect his kidneys or even if the bladder were to rupture. The other thing that has me very concerned is his lack of ability to walk. If he's limping on only 1 or 2 legs he could just be really sore so that's not as big of deal (as long as the vet took X-rays to confirm nothing was broken). But if he is unable to move any one of his legs (kind of drags it) I would be worried about possible spinal damage. Spinal damage could also make it hard for him to pee. It can be hard to diagnose something like that unless he were to have an MRI. So, I really think Boogie needs to see a vet ASAP to have all these things checked out. I don't mean to alarm you, I just want what is best for Boogie and it's hard to know exactly what you tell you without being able to examine him. I hope you find this information helpful. It sounds like your dog is likely in extreme pain, and he needs veterinary attention immediately. He may have fractures, internal injuries and bleeding, and may even have neurological issues from being hit by the car. If you mean that he is unable to urinate, that is a medical emergency, and requires immediate veterinary care. Your vet will assess him and recommend appropriate treatment, which will likely include pain medication, imaging and possibly surgical repair. Do not give pain medication to him without checking with your vet, as pain medications for humans can be toxic to dogs. Good luck, and I hope he feels better soon!

I highly recommend taking Red back to the veterinarian and consider an abdominal ultrasound to evaluate his bladder and kidneys. My concern is there is some type of damage that may have not been able to be seen on xrays. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I would strongly urge you to get Rosco in to be seen immediately by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may have an internal bleed, trauma to his kidneys, airway damage, etc. that could progress and worsen leading to death. If you can get him in right away, I would do so so that he has the best chance possible to pull through.

If you are certain that Gus has not urinated in three days, you need to take him to a veterinarian right away. If he has a blockage in his urethra, this is a life threatening emergency. If it is an obstruction in his urethra, unfortunately there is just not a way for you to fix that or make it better at home, and the consequences of waiting --to see how he does in the hopes that it is something else--the consequences are too great. Most often a urethral obstruction is caused by a bladder stone that slips into the urethra causing an obstruction when it hits the os penis (the bone inside of the dog's penis). I'ms sorry I don't have a better solution for you. You need to take him to a vet NOW. If you don't have a veterinary emergency hospital near you, call your regular vet even if they are closed. I'm so sorry to hear Sasha got into an accident. Most likely she isn't urinating due to the pain/discomfort in her leg and the difficulty in getting in "position" with the splint. If she isn't on any pain medications, I would recommend contacting her veterinarian to discuss what pain control options she may have. Depending on which leg it is, you can also use a towel as a sling underneath her to help support her weight and allow her to urinate. There is the possibility depending on the location/extent of her injuries that the nerves that control her bladder were damaged in the accident or the bladder itself damaged. If she continues to not be able to urinate, she would need to be evaluated to ensure her bladder is intact and her nerve control is nornal. Good luck!

Please contact your vets office to discuss her progress as without a full history of all of her injuries and wounds, how much she ate or drank when she was in the clinic and how well she had been toileting before she went home it is impossible to guess whether this is expected or if it is a set back from how well she had been doing. Tehy may need to adjust her pain medications, or assist her either with enemas or manual expression of the bladder which would require an extended hospital stay until she is more stable or they may be able to demnostrate some handling and exercises to help support her balance and encourage her to toilet normally
