How safe is pregnancy and labor for a dog with hip dysplasia?

Without seeing the xrays it is impossible to say for sure. Any fracture of the pelvis can result in a narrowing of the birth canal and difficulty during delivery but a fracture of the thigh bone alone should not generally have any adverse effect. Check with your vet if any additional risks are expected

Hip dysphasia is not fatal. However it is genetic and can be passed to her puppies. I would recommend talking to your vet about pain management and joint supplements she can take while pregnant. I hope that helps

Hello. There is no need to change her food initially. Just feed the best food you can afford. The last few weeks before the puppies are born, switch her to a good puppy food as this will give her more calories she will need until the puppies are weaned & eating on their own. You can have your veterinarian ultrasound her abdomen or take an x-ray to confirm pregnancy & her hip dysplasia will not hurt her pregnancy, although this condition can be inherited by her puppies. That is not a general rule valid for everyone and, as far as my knowledge goes, there is no scientific studies to prove that. I can say that is definitively true that chihuahua often require c-section, regardless their age. I would suggest to have Jing checked during pregnancy to determine the exact number of puppies, their vitality and her condition and make sure everything runs smoothly. Hip dysplasia means that the dog has poor hip conformation, with the ball of the femur not tight into the hip joint. Due to the joint looseness arthritis usually develops as the dogs age. A hip joint fracture sounds more like it was from a specific injury. With rest a hip fracture should heal over six weeks but if the hip joint is involved then Jenny may get hip arthritis and pain in her hip. Heat will relax her muscles and increase the blood supply to heal the fracture so it is a good thing to do. Please keep her in a small area and take her out only to the bathroom for a month. Yes she could be pregnant as males can be fertile at 5 months of age. She can carry a litter of pups, but her pelvis may be too narrow to give birth normally. Best is to discuss this with your vet who can do xrays of the pelvis and determine whether it will be possible for her to give birth without needing a cesarian section. If you do not want her to have pups and do not want the risk in the future I suggest you have her spayed.

Hello, sorry to hear about Shiro. He does indeed have hip dysplasia as is evident in his x-rays. This diseases does indeed require surgical correction, but only if Shiro seems to be in discomfort. Hip Dysplasia results in secondary osteoarthritis which in the long term can impact your pets ability to walk and overall comfort. There are two different procedures with regards to surgery, an FHNO were we remove the femoral head and neck or a total hip replacement were we replace the ball and joint with metal implants as they do in humans. Ultimately, the best contributor to decreasing osteoarthritis in dogs is by maintaining an overall low weight and lean body condition score. Obese pets with hip dysplasia tend to do worse. Now, with regards to surgery, it does not need to occur now, typically with either surgery, we want pets to be fully developed so that their bones are fully grown and they have developed all of the musculature. I would recommend asking your veterinarian to refer you to an orthopedic surgeon who may be able to better assist you with Shiro's hips dysplasia. Hope this helps and best of luck.
