Why is my dog suddenly hiding under the bed and growling at the wall?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 20 lbs

Recently my 5yo male Shih tzu has taken to hiding under my bed in the same area, and, occasionally, growling at the wall. There is nothing under there from what I can tell (checked for trash, bugs, mold, etc.) I'd chalk it up to wanting a safe space but he rarely goes under any other furniture and when he does its only to grab a toy or chewstick. There's been no other changes in his behavior and his health is fine.

Any continued abnormal symptoms (longer than 24 hours) warrants a vet exam. I cannot tell you what is wrong with him just by your description as those symptoms are very vague. I suggest you get him examined by your vet to see if there is an underlying medical issue. If there is no underlying medical problem found then you can speak to your vet about possibly trying some anti-anxiety medications as the behavior he is exhibiting is not normal. If you can, video him doing this so you can show the vet.
