My dog hides when I cook. How can I help her with kitchen anxiety?

It sounds like he is experiencing some separation anxiety when left in the kitchen. You could try an Adaptil collar and Solliquin chews and see if that helps. Could be a number of reasons why Chloe doesn't want to come out from underneath the bed. Something could have spooked her, she may not be feeling well or perhaps ambient temperatures have made it more comfortable for her underneath the bed. I would try coaxing her out with her favorite treat or toy and examining her for any injuries. If her tail is tucked and she is panting and seems nervous, then it's safe to assume that something has spooked her. Try calming her down in a soft voice and giving her her favorite treat. It may take a couple of days for her to recover from whatever the incident was. However if she seems ill and is not eating or drinking, vomiting or having diarrhea then it's best to have her examined by a veterinarian to determine the underlying disease or condition. I hope you get to the bottom of things soon and that Chloe returns to her normal self.

Separation anxiety can be difficult to address but with patience and persistence training can help. Rather than starting on anti-anxiety medications right away, I typically recommend trying products such as NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin and an Adaptil collar, which can both be found online or at your local pet store quite easily. I would also recommend using a Thundershirt, which can be found online or at the pet store. It would also help if you began feeding Sienna breakfast and dinner in the kennel so that she becomes used to being inside the cage for positive things. I would move all of her toys to the inside of the kennel and whenever she goes inside the kennel, reward her with her favorite treat. If this does not help, I would recommend speaking with her veterinarian and discuss anti-anxiety medications as these may be beneficial in deterring this separation anxiety she suffers from. This sounds like something scared her. Think back to see if you can determine the cause of her anxiety. Then you’ll be able to work on changing this behavior. When training anxious dogs I usually have them on an anti anxiety supplement like Solliquin, or another brand that they sell at PetCo. That helps them relax and makes them easier to train. Always praise good behavior and give treats to build her confidence. That will help her trust you and be more relaxed in stressful situations. Dogs are incredibly good at picking up on body language and routines. Either your schedule is very consistent so Luna knows it's harness time, or there's something you unconsciously do differently when picking her up for the harness. This sounds like an anxiety based behavior. I would recommend amping up your treats (peanut butter, liverwurst, baby food, hot dog are all good choices) and working on counter conditioning her to the harness. Counter conditioning is the process of changing a dog's emotional reaction to a situation, rather than trying to start by changing the behavior (basically teaching her to LOVE the harness so she gets in easily, rather than teaching her to stay really still so you can get it on but she's still freaking out on the inside). If possible, working with a trainer who can help you with this process would be great. I can also do a consult with you to go over more details for steps. I certainly sympathize with your situation. My own 2 year old dog is the same way. The key to training him is to expose him to situations that are not too scary for him, but improve his confidence. This is not a quick or easy process, and will need to be continued long term. I have found the best method to be a desensitization and counter-conditioning system. When Max encounters something that is slightly scary for him (not too overhelming at first), ask him to sit or lie down for a treat. The goal is to get him to do something that he is comfortable with and receive a treat (positive reinforcement) for doing that behavior instead of being afraid. Do not give him any reinforcement (verbal or otherwise) for fearful behavior, but try to ignore it. Instead reward the behavior you want to see. It would be a great idea to have a trainer try to help you start this type of training program, so you might ask your vet for a recommendation on a trainer. Hi, sorry you are having this problem with Chiquita. Sometimes dogs exhibiting this behavior are in some kind of pain. the not eating is concerning that she may have a health issue as well. I would take her to the vet and have a check up to make sure nothing is wrong with her, If she is healthy, you can try using treats to coax her out of your room. It is possible something happened to her that scared her or caused her pain and it will take some time for her to get over it. Be gentle and patient and go slow with her to show her that there is nothing to be afraid of. If you bring her food to her and she won't eat, she will need to see a vet. Good luck, I hope this help!
