My dog chews due to separation anxiety. How can I help her stay alone?

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern! Unfortunately, separation anxiety can be quite difficult to address for most dogs. I usually recommend a multi modal approach. I recommend the following non-prescription approach prior to anything prescription: 1. NaturVet Quiet Moments calm chews plus Melatonin (can be found online quite easily. 2. Adaptil pheromone collar 3. Adaptil diffuser 4. Thundershirt In combination with this, I typically recommend providing plenty of toys such as a kong toy filled with peanut butter and some other noise making toys. I have recently recommended a product called the Pet Cube. This allows you to watch him via an app on your phone remotely and you can even control a laser pointer and interact with him while you are away. If this does not work or the behavior worsens, I typically recommend adding in anti-anxiety medications such as Trazodone, Amitriptyline, Clomipramine (clomicalm), etc. in combination with the above recommendations. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Camellia may have generalized anxiety, or separation anxiety. This can cause dogs to have destructive behaviors, such as chewing excessively, tearing up furniture or clothes, etc. I recommend consulting with your veterinarian about medications that can be given to help reduce anxiety at home, and make dogs much more calm at home. These can include Trazodone, Prozac, Clomicalm, etc. Many dogs tolerate these medications very well and can save them from being relinquished to shelters. I hope this is helpful! Please consider there before rehoming Camellia, as her underlying problems will not go away on their own, and changing homes can actually worsen her signs.

Sorry to hear that Bo is having this issue. Thank you for rescuing him :) Separation anxiety is a huge issue in dogs and it is not an easy fix even with medications. We cannot recommend you give any medications without you talking to your vet first, especially a drug like alprazolam that is a controlled substance. What I can tell you though is that 0.25mg will not touch a dog that size. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than humans as they metabolize the drug differently. What you really need to do is try to correct the behavior instead of trying to mask it. I suggest you consult a dog trainer in your area that will come to your home and assess the situation. They can help you try and correct the behavior. Sometimes medications are indicated to be used in conjunction with training and then you can try to wean them off the drugs eventually. You will need to work with your vet and trainer about using medications in conjunction with behavioral modification. I would recommend providing him with plenty of toys including the kong toy that allows you to insert peanut butter or small treats so that he has to really work to get the treat. Adaptil priducta, which can be found online, can also help. If you are unable to correct this behavior, I would try NaturVet quiet moments calm chews with Melatonin which can be found online or at your local pet store. If there is still no improvement after trying these, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended such as anti anxiety medicatioms. Unless the anxiety is so bad that you need anti-anxiety medications, it is not necessary to see the vet for this behavior. There are several things you can try listed below to see if this relieves the separation anxiety. As for eating other dogs feces, you can buy bitter apple and apply it to the feces on the ground to help deter Sadie from eating the feces. I hope this helps! Hello. I would start with an over the counter anxiety product like Zylkene. I would also start using a dog appeasing pheromone in the home ( room diffuser ) or it comes as a collar. The pheromone can calm an anxious dog without drugs. Adaptil is the name of this product. If this does not help over the course of a couple of weeks, you will need to talk to your vet about possible behavior modification therapy & the use of prescription medications like Trazodone.
