Dog with HGE, Metronidazole, no poop. Is yogurt with meds okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 55.1 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis on Tuesday evening and the vet prescribed Metronidazole. My dog hasn't had a bowel movement since then (it's now Friday). Is this normal (he's also on chicken and rice diet). Also I give the metronidazole to him hidden in a teaspoon of natural yoghurt - will that have an adverse effect on him?

This is very normal! I always warn my clients that after severe diarrhea, fasting them, starting chicken and rice and metronidazole that their dog may not have a bowel movement for several days. As long as Hercules is eating, drinking, not straining to poop and is not lethargic the poop with come! If he is straining, not eating or vomiting he should be rechecked.

The yogurt is fine in small amounts. Adult dogs and cats are actually lactose intolerant and dairy products can cause Gi signs in some animals. If you want to use a probiotic I would use one made for animals like Purina Fortiflora. If he is tolerating the yogurt you can continue it.

This may not be unusual. Pets with diarrhea will often flush out the distal colon and it can take 2-3 days before the stool is present again in the colon. Make sure Figlio is eating well and acting normal. This is generally a good indication that he is recovering as expected. If he does not have a bowel movement after 3 days or if he seems to be feeling ill again, have him re-examined. Daily walks will help the bowels to move as well. Lastly, make sure he is drinking plenty of water. I hope this helps and that he continues to recover well.

Is soft puppy stool normal after metronidazole for diarrhea?

Hi! I would say that it is likely ok. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to see results. If it is just soft and Snowball is otherwise fine, I would just give it a few days before getting concerned. Keep in mind that metronidazole is not always a curative medication for diarrhea but rather an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties that help with colitis. This means that it will not treat an underlying disease every time. Perhaps try a few days on a bland diet mostly composed of boiled chicken or turkey and rice. If no resolution within a few days, it may be appropriate to start her on a probiotic or try a different medication such as Tylosin. Best of luck with her!

My dog hasn't pooped in 4 days after Flagyl for diarrhea. Is this normal?

Sometimes when they have diarrhea and haven't eaten as much it takes a few days to build up enough stool to have a proper bowel movement. If he is struggling or straining to poop then yes, I would be concerned. But if he is eating, drinking, not vomiting and acting normally, then I wouldn't be concerned. If he hasn't had a BM by tomorrow morning, I would have your vet take another look at him. I hope this helps!

My dog had HGE, now no bowel movement. Is he constipated after HGE?

Poor guy. He has been through a lot this past week. It isn’t uncommon for pets to experience a bit of slowed GI motility (ileus) after having HGE. As long as he is still eating well and not seen straining to poop, he likely is just fine. Give him another day or two to form a solid normal stool and continue to monitor him for any straining, which would suggest that he is likely constipated and in need of an enema. But this is very rare following a bout of diarrhea. I would also suggest giving him a daily probiotic (ie Culturelle over the counter is highly recommended) and 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin for added fiber to help form a stoool. I hope Roux has a normal stool soon. Best wishes and take care.

Cat on metronidazole: Explosive diarrhea normal? Keep giving meds?

Since, Beau has only been on metronidazole for one day, I would continue it as it may not have started to work yet. It typically takes 24-48 hours to see any changes. However, if Beau stops eating, is lethargic or has blood in his stool, I would reach out to your veterinarian again and let them know. Beau may need another physical exam or other medications. My dog had diarrhea, now not pooping. What food or probiotics help?

I wouldn't be too concerned about Eskimo not defecating since he has been on an anti-diarrheal. It is not uncommon for a dog to go a few days without pooping after having diarrhea, so as long as he isn't straining to defecate it's unlikely that he's constipated. He will poop when he has to go! I'm assuming you meant to type yogurt - as long as Eskimo doesn't have a dairy allergy or sensitivity a small amount of yogurt once or twice a day is probably okay.

My dog had HGE. Why is his poop still bloody after treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is actually not expected. This may mean that Ozzy may need to continue to be on therapy for the HGE. For this reason, I would encourage you to keep a close eye on him. If this continues to happen, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can also check in with your veterinarian to see if they can prescribe another course of the metronidazole. Otherwise, if this is not observed again, he may be fine.
