My dog hasn't pooped in 4 days after Flagyl for diarrhea. Is this normal?

This may not be unusual. Pets with diarrhea will often flush out the distal colon and it can take 2-3 days before the stool is present again in the colon. Make sure Figlio is eating well and acting normal. This is generally a good indication that he is recovering as expected. If he does not have a bowel movement after 3 days or if he seems to be feeling ill again, have him re-examined. Daily walks will help the bowels to move as well. Lastly, make sure he is drinking plenty of water. I hope this helps and that he continues to recover well.

You should not be worried yet, after several days of diarrhea, the intestines empty completely and it takes 2-4 days to start and having stools again, as long as he is otherwise back to normal that's the most important thing. Flagyl also tends to cause slight constipation, but again nothing to be worried about just yet.

Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started. As long as he is eating and drinking and feeling good, I would not immediately panic. I do often see dogs recovering from diarrhea go as much as 48 - 72 hours before having a bowel movement. If it's longer than this, or if he's not feeling well, get him rechecked immediately.

Hi there. No, metronidazole does not cause constipation. It's normal for a cat to go 2-3 days without a bowel movement if he is getting over diarrhea - it takes time for the intestinal tract to fill up again once the diarrhea is resolved. As long as he is acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking, not vomiting, and not straining to defecate), there should be no cause for concern. He will have a bowel movement when he's ready, probably sometime in the next day or two :)

Thanks for using Pet Coach! Sometimes after not eating and having severe diarrhea, it can take time for a solid stool to reach the "end of the pipes" so to speak. I would say that 4 days is on the long end of what I expect so if she does not defecate in the next 12 hours, I would recommend seeing your vet to make sure she is not constipated (which could happen with serious dehydration). I am so sorry Magnum is going through this. After a dog has diarrhea it is common for them not to defecate for a few days. If Magnum is straining tot defecate I would recommend bringing him to the veterinarian tomorrow. If not I would give him another day and not worry at this point. Hi! I would say that it is likely ok. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to see results. If it is just soft and Snowball is otherwise fine, I would just give it a few days before getting concerned. Keep in mind that metronidazole is not always a curative medication for diarrhea but rather an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties that help with colitis. This means that it will not treat an underlying disease every time. Perhaps try a few days on a bland diet mostly composed of boiled chicken or turkey and rice. If no resolution within a few days, it may be appropriate to start her on a probiotic or try a different medication such as Tylosin. Best of luck with her!
