Is it safe to give my dog herbal medicine with Diazepam for seizures?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are no herbs or supplements that are known to be helpful for seizures unfortunately. Also, it is not recommended generally to combined supplements with the regular anti-seizure medications as some of these can interact with the medications. Good news is that usually dogs become more and more tolerant of the anti-seizure medications and become less and less groggy on them as the time goes on. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Camilla! Disorientation, anxiety, panting and not acting normal are normal post seizure. This period can last up to 24 hours. Sometimes the recovery period can be different after each seizure. We can not prescribe medications with out examining Camila. If your Vet has prescribed valium for Camila then I would follow the instructions they provided. There is no interaction with valium, phenobarbital and potassium bromide. If they didn't you will have to get the dosing from them. As long as she isn't having any more seizures I would hold off on any additional medications right now and let her recover. If she has 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period she needs to be seen by a Vet. I wish you the best!

I'm really sorry to hear about poor Bonnie. Unfortunately, acepromazine is not similar to valium for it's anti-seizure effects and can be dangerous to give, so I don't recommend giving it. The fact that she's having a cluster of seizures and is having difficulty resting is concerning enough that she should see a vet as soon as possible. There are other treatment options that can be initiated to help control her seizures. I hope that helps and Bonnie gets better soon.

Poor guy. The treatment is ok; however, if we suspect any kind of liver involvement there are safer anti-seizure medications to consider here such as Zonisamide or Keppra. Although we would suspect the ALT to be elevated over the ALP in most liver problem dogs. You should certainly discuss these concerns with your vet. This may be why the liver supplement was prescribed, in case there is liver involvement. I would also consider getting an abdominal ultrasound done on him to evaluate his liver and adrenal glands. Both these organs can cause the elevated ALP, so we need to check if this is the underlying problem for sure or not. And ultimately seizures should be evaluted via MRI/CT scan; however, the cost of this limits most pet owners from having this done. They can be given together but often not needed due to how they work. Phenobarbital is given to prevent seizures while diazepam is giving to stop a seizure. It does no good to administer diazepam unless there is a seizure going on. Diazepam is very short acting so it can be repeated within 5 minutes in severe cases. I would not repeated it more than 2-3 times in a row If she is still having seizures despite these medicines then she needs to be seen whether your regular vet or an ER clinic nearby. They can provide injectable seizure medication and possibly add or change to a different at home pill to control further problems.

Hello there and thank you for using Pet Coach! There are multiple anti-seizure drugs available and some with less side effects than others. If Bailey is on Phenobarbital, Keppra may be a good option for him as this particular drug has fewer side effects and I find that it is less harsh on the liver. Switching to a different drug with less side effects will certainly help. You can also talk to your vet about prescription liver diets in addition to the Denmarin. Hepagen-C is a veterinary product that is over the counter, which we use at our clinic in conjunction with Denamarin or Denosyl. Your vet can also perform a Bile Acids test to determine how much function of the liver has been lost. A scan would certainly be recommended and there are sedative combinations and drugs that we can use that will not trigger seizures, as they are anti-seizure drugs that we use to control seizures. I would still recommend an ultrasound, but talk to your vet about the different drugs that can be used to prevent seizures while sedated. I hope this helps! Sometimes the anti-seizure medication needs to be increased to control the seizures, there is a chance they could get worse over time as you've seen. I think upping Mali's dosage is a good idea, and see how this helps her. If it doesn't, take her back into the vet.
