Is acepromazine safe for my seizing epileptic dog to get rest?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Camilla! Disorientation, anxiety, panting and not acting normal are normal post seizure. This period can last up to 24 hours. Sometimes the recovery period can be different after each seizure. We can not prescribe medications with out examining Camila. If your Vet has prescribed valium for Camila then I would follow the instructions they provided. There is no interaction with valium, phenobarbital and potassium bromide. If they didn't you will have to get the dosing from them. As long as she isn't having any more seizures I would hold off on any additional medications right now and let her recover. If she has 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period she needs to be seen by a Vet. I wish you the best!

She is having cluster of seizures that ideally should be treated by your veterinarian at the clinic/hospital. What you are seeing now is most likely ''a post ictal' phase, that means the signs (pacing, restless, seems blind and so on) in the period of time after the seizure episode. These signs could last even 24hours. The major concern is that she could go into another cluster of seizure episode and have severe secondary effect from it. I would strongly advised to have her treated at the clinic until she is completely out from these acute episodes. I'm sorry to hear that Mali is having this issue. I do not know the answer to your question as I do not know the ingredients of the herbal supplement you are giving. This would be a question for your vet since they have her medical history. My opinion is that she should be on a known anticonvulsant medication like phenobarbital if you want any chance at the seizures being controlled. I have never seen an herbal supplement control seizures. I think it was just coincidence that she had no seizures while taking the supplement.

Hello. It is unlikely that this dose will be fatal, but this is an indication that she cannot tolerate this medication. Sedatives can be very unpredictable in dogs, so much care & thought must be given before administering them. If you can get her to the vet, that would be best. To avoid being bitten, ask to borrow a muzzle from your vet, or go ahead & purchase one. If you cannot do this, then you will just have to let the ace wear off, which can take 24 hours. Just make sure she is not lying in the damp or in bad weather. If you need to get her to the vet, next time you might talk about using something like Trazodone to calm her anxieties, or just a tiny dose of the ace. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. Lorazapam is an anti-anxiety drug, and it may not be appropriate for Huey in this case. It sounds like he is really struggling, and I would recommend giving your vet a call now to describe his symptoms and they can discuss a medication that may be helpful for him. Any time a known epileptic starts seizing again, especially with any frequency, it's time for a vet visit asap. Likely they will do bloodwork to make sure nothing has changed since you were prescribed medications last. You did not mention any phenobarbital or potassium bromide for long term relief from seizures? Is your dog on any any antiseizure medications or just the Valium as needed? If he is not on medications currently they may very well start him on something for long term relief. If he already is-they will likely adjust the dosages. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately Acepromazine does not take away fear and anxiety. It just sedates the dog, he will appear quieter, but inside, she is just as anxious, just cannot express it. There is a much better medication for that and it is called Sileo. Your veterinarian can provide you with that and give you the proper dosage for Bella. We are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Your veterinarian also knows your dog and the potential risks for your dog receiving acepromazine.
