My dog's in heat, possibly pregnant, bleeding from rectum. What to do?

With these symptoms I worry that your dog may have a pyometra instead of being pregnant. Pyometras typically develop around 3-6 weeks after they go into heat and present as bloody discharge, lethargy, abdominal swelling, etc. I would recommend that she is seen by a veterinarian who can perform an ultrasound to make sure she isn't suffering from an infection.

I would have Hennessey seen by a vet immediately. I would be very concerned that this heavy bleeding, lethargy, and bloating is caused by a pyometra. A pyometra is a serous infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Using a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays, the vet can diagnose if she does have a pyometra and can treat her for it. A decrease in activity and in appetite can happen when they are in heat, so if she is otherwise normal, then I wouldn't be too worried. It sounds like Sophie is in heat for the first time, which causes the bleeding from the vagina. Due to the fact you have an unneutered male in the house and she has already mated, it is likely she will become pregnant. If you don't want puppies, you can see if the vet will spay her. That will terminate any pregnancy, and keep her from getting pregnant in the future. I'd also recommend having your male neutered.

It's very abnormal, it's either because of another heat cycle which will mean she is not pregnant or because the pregnancy was terminated prematurely. an ultrasound at your vet's can shed some light on this.

Poor girl. Some pets do bleed heavier than others. I would make sure that try and replace her fluids by offering her Pedialyte non-flavored mixed 50:50 with water. This will help replace her electrolytes and also make sure she hydrates herself. I would most definitely still recommend keeping her appointment tomorrow so that the vet can access her to ensure she isn't becoming mildly anemic due to the extensive blood loss. If she has, then the vet will likely recommend iron supplements for her to treat for this. I am not sure what the concern is for other dogs.
