My female dog is bleeding. Is she in heat? Could she be pregnant?

She is likely in pre-estrus, the time before heat where a female bleeds. You may not notice it during the day, as she may be cleaning herself while awake. When the bleeding stops or gets very faint you will need to watch out as she may get pregnant. This will be up to three weeks after the bleeding ceases.

It's very abnormal, it's either because of another heat cycle which will mean she is not pregnant or because the pregnancy was terminated prematurely. an ultrasound at your vet's can shed some light on this.

If she actually got preegnant, the she will be having puppies 8-9 weeks, so the spay date is not a good one. You need to schedule an appointment now to check the source of bleeding and to possibly give her a hormone shot so the pregnancy can be terminated. The good news is that your male dog was neutered. While neutered male dogs *can* mate with in heat females, they do so uncommonly and obviously can't impregnate the female. I'm not sure where Cuddles is having the bleeding from, but if it's coming from her vaginal area, the most likely explanation is that she is in heat. Dogs go into heat twice a year, and bleeding is normal to see during that time. Sometimes dogs can have silent heats where you don't see bleeding, or they can clean themselves up before owners notice the bleeding, so that may be why you've only seen it once before (but I'm not sure how long you have had Cuddles). They normally stay joined for several minutes. Once the swelling from the male decrease they will part. There is s likely chance she may be pregnant from this but never a guarantee. The best recommendations are to breed a female after 18 months of age to allow full maturity. if she is younger than a year then she may need a c section to help with delivery.
