My dog has a healing cut on his penis. When should I see a vet?

If the cut is small and looks as if it can heal on its own you can try cleaning it with a dilute iodine solution 1-2 times a day. You can also apply a small amount of triple antibiotic ointment on the area. It is important to make sure he is not lickin the area, as this can delay healing and make infection worse. If the cut is any larger than 1-2 centimeters then I would recommend having it looked at by a vet because it may have trouble healing. I hope this helps. Bite wounds are serious because these can easily result in more trauma than what seems apparent and also in an infection. If there was evidence of blood before, I am concerned that there could have been significant trauma. This presentation could be due to a trauma and localized secondary skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is not going to away on its own and needs attention. I think its reasonable to monitor it for a few days; if it is not resolving, get him in to see your vet. Also place an Ecollar on him to prevent him from licking at it. If he starts to have any trouble urinating or if the spot is getting bigger, or is appearing more red and inflamed, or it it starts to bleed, take, him in ASAP. Hello. Poor baby. He needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. I cannot tell if this is a tumor or somehow the penis has been trapped outside the sheath. Either way, he needs immediate care, especially if whatever is going on prevents him from urinating properly. This looks very painful & I hope you can have him seen quickly. However, it would still be a good idea to have him evaluated by a veterinarian to look at it more closely in case it is deeper than what it looks like. Also, these can be painful and can get infected so your veterinarian could potentially start antibiotics and pain control medications. If superficial, these wounds tend to respond well to therapy and heal relatively quickly. Good luck and have a good night!
