My dog's rear is bleeding badly. Is it a wound or a tumor?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is not going to away on its own and needs attention. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

I would try some kind of wrap around his belly or maybe put a shirt on him so you can transport him now. It is likely pressure alone won’t stop the bleeding and it needs to be addressed. There isn’t anything at home you can give him or product to put on it to stop the bleeding without causing an infection. Good luck and kisses to Braxton!

Bite wounds are serious because these can easily result in more trauma than what seems apparent and also in an infection. If there was evidence of blood before, I am concerned that there could have been significant trauma. This presentation could be due to a trauma and localized secondary skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. An immediate check up at your local veterinarian is needed. Bleeding from the penis indicates a serious problem. In an unneutered dog, it could be a prostate infection, enlargement, or tumor. Some other possibilities include a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a systemic bleeding problem (coagulopathy). I suspect that his paw biting is unrelated and may be due to allergies or a hot spot, but he should definitely be seen by a veterinarian to determine the cause of both issues and come up with a good treatment plan. If at any point it starts bleeding or releasing a discharge or becomes bloody or painful, have him evaluated by your veterinarian at that point for further assessment. This looks like a skin mass or tumor, but it is difficult to know exactly what it might be without being able to examine it in person. I would recommend having your vet take a look. They might recommend taking a sample using a small needle, or they might recommend surgery to remove the growth, especially since it is bleeding. In your picture the blood looks like it is near Snoopy's prepuce - if Snoopy is bleeding from his penis or prepuce I would recommend seeing a veterinarian on an emergency basis.
