Dog shaking head, scratching ears, clear blisters. What should I do?

I would try to give her some benadryl to make her more comfortable. You coudl put a little Neosporin on the area, just be careful to not get it down in the canals. Poor Bowser! The only concern I have is that he may have something stuck deeper into the canal. You can try some Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps his itching. See link below. If not, I would have your vet take a look deeper into his ear canals to make sure nothing is stuck and there isn't an infection deeper. I am so sorry to hear that Gizmo's ear is bothering her. From what you are describing I believe she has an ear infection, and has been scratching at her ear causing the changes you observe. Ear infections in dogs can be very difficult to manage, and are very common. Though cleaning may help prevent ear infections ruins, it won't treat an ear infection that is present. Antibiotics are needed. Unfortunately, there aren't any medications over the counter which would be helpful at this stage. Outer ear infections can progress to inner ear infections. Inner ear infections are very difficult to treat, are very painful and have serious potential complications, such as hearing loss and problems with balance. I would suggest a trip to the vet as soon as you can. The vet will use a tool to look into Gizmo's ears, and may take a swab of the infected ear and send it away for analysis, so that the exact pathogens causing the infection can be identified and therefore a specific antibiotic can be used.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It’s possible his anal glands are full/uncomfortable. If they are bulging on either side of his anus when you palapate from the outside, then that definitely could be the case. I recommend bringing him to your vet for a rectal exam/anal gland expression and to check his ears. He likely will need and ear cleaner and a steroid/antibiotic/antifungal/antiyeast ointment such as otomax/kometamax/posatex if he has an ear infection. A few days of an allergy medication called Apoquel may help as well. Good luck!

It sounds like Gypsy may have an ear infection. This is a very common condition in dogs and is treated with special ear cleaners and medication for bacteria or yeast, depending on what type of organism is causing the infection. I'd recommend taking Gypsy in to the vet right away (although an emergency clinic is unnecessary) for evaluation and to get treatment started. Best of luck!

It looks like Gizmo has pyoderma/a bacterial skin infection characterized by scaly red collarettes and papules. The typical treatment is a 10 day course of an antibiotic called Simplicef (cefpodoxime), a medicated antibacterial/anti-fungal shampoo such as Malaseb (available on petco.com or chewy.com or at your vet’s) and a topical antibiotic/steroid ointment such as Dermavet or an antibiotic/steroid powder such as Neopredef with tetracaine. You always have an option of seeing another veterinarian if you are not comfortable going back to your current vet for a recheck. Good luck!
