My Maltipoo has a hard, squishy bump near his penis. Should I worry?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. While this could be something benign, there is a possibility of it being malignant which is why it needs to be taken care of. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

Hi and thanks for posting. I wouldn't worry too much unless it is red, inflamed, itches, has discharge coming it or if you notice it getting larger or other similar lesions appear. Then it is time to see your veterinarian to get it checked out.

Hello, sorry to hear about Chewy. Depending on how it feels that could be something benign such as a fluid filled cyst or an abscess (pocket of infection and pus), or it could be something more aggressive such as cancer. The only way to tell is by taking a sample of it and looking at the cells under the microscope. If it's a cyst or an abscess, your veterinarian will be able to tell most likely without needing to look at the cells. I would recommend having the lump evaluated by your veterinarian. In the interim you should monitor the lump daily to note any changes in size or appearance. Hope this helps and best of luck

To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options with you. From the pictures you have sent the "bump" appears to be a skin growth. There are several types off masses that can grow in the skin of dogs such as cysts, lipomas and some types of cancers. Some are benign and some are malignant, so careful observation is important, as well as having a vet examine it if you are concerned. Since you only just noticed the lump, and Doom is neutered, I would continue to monitor it for growth, ulceration, changes in texture or color. Measure the mass with a ruler so you can compare its growth in a couple weeks time. Rapidly growing masses are more concerning. If the mass has grown or changed in that time I would advise taking Doom to have the mass examined and analyzed. I hope that this answer was helpful and more importantly that Doom feels better soon.
