My Yorkie has a hard, recurring bump on his back. How do I treat it?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

Hello, I have a 4 1/2 year old Yorkshire terrier. He has a pimple, about 2-3 millimeters in width, it is hard, not itchy, not painful, but has a pointy hard bit. It annoys me more, then him as it is in the middle of his back. He has a silkie coat and this hard pimple is so annoying. Appeared all of a sudden. There is no puss, just hardened skin about 1-2 millimeter off the skin. Dog is very well otherwise. How do I treat this. I have scratched it off once, but seems to come back again.

I would recommend bringing Maxi to the veterinarian. The only way to treat it is surgical removal if it is a cyst or a growth. Your veterinarian would be able to determine exactly what it is and what the course of treatment would be. WIthout physically seeing this it is difficult to say what treatment would be. Without seeing a picture it is hard to say what they are. Yorkies can commonly have allergies that can lead to a skin infection and small pustules on the skin. They can also have adenomas that are benign skin growths that occur and appear as small warts about the size of pencil erasers. Pustules can be a sign of an infection and require antibiotics. Adenomas are typically removed if another procedure is needed and they are already under anesthesia. They are not worth anesthesia just for themselves.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly a lot of skin masses can look and feel the same. I always recommend anytime a new mass shows up or an old one changes that you get it looked at by a Vet. It could be a lipoma (benign fatty mass), normal anatomy, a cyst or a cancerous growth. I don't think you need to rush Bella in but watch it closely for rapid changes and have her seen at your convenience. I hope this helps and I wish Bella the best!

Why does my Yorkie have a hard, black, itchy spot on his neck?

This could be a cyst, an infection, plaque or even a skin tumor like a melanoma. Masses that grow suddenly, change in color/size/are painful are more concerning than those that do not change. The only way to know for sure what this mass is would be for your veterinarian to do an exam and potentially biopsy it. I do not recommend applying any ointment or other medication yet as it could be harmful depending on what it is.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
