My dog has a small, hard, painless lump on his hind leg. What is it?

If you want to watch it that is fine, but if it changes or rapidly grows it should be looked at. Sadly both benign and cancerous growth can look the same. Hello, this looks like a histiocytoma, a benign tumor. Fairly common in younger dogs, it usually spontaneously regresses without treatment. Have your veterinarian take a look to make sure that it is not anything else. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to see the bump when the picture enlarges. Based on your description it could be a sebaceous adenoma which can have a brown dot in the center because they produce a waxy brown discharge. They are benign and some dog breeds grow a lot of them over time. Sadly many skin bumps can look the same. I always recommend when a new lump is found or an established one grows or changes to have it checked by your Vet. If it is small enough and Neeko is a calm dog some vets can remove skin masses with local anesthesia. I hope this helps and I wish Neeko the very best!

But just in general a skin mass could be benign (skin tag, etc) or malignant. Unfortunately without some sort of sampling (cytology or biopsy to collect cells) there is not a way to know for sure based on appearance. Small size, no growth, lack of ulceration, and freely moveable nature are certainly favorable characteristics. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect this is a skin mass It could also be chronically infected and inflamed skin, but it is less likely. A visit at your local vets is recommended to make the definite diagnosis (taking aspirates of the lesion may be necessary) and to start treatment for Coco. If it is a skin mass, surgical excision may be the only treatment option. Unfortunately, there is not much that you can do at home to help Coco.

This lump under Behr's skin is most likely something benign like a cyst or lipoma, however there is a small chance it could be something cancerous. At such a young age cancer is unlikely but not impossible. If the growth doesn't go away within a few days or it gets larger it would be a good idea to have Behr examined by a veterinarian. If necessary a small needle aspirate can be taken from the lump and looked at under the microscope to determine if it should be removed surgically. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point.
