My dog has a painful lumpy bump with a pinhole on his leg. What is it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to say with out seeing a picture or examining Charlie. I always recommend any new skin bump be looked at by your Vet. If you want to watch it that is fine, but if it changes or rapidly grows it should be looked at. Sadly both benign and cancerous growth can look the same. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It does appear that he has developed a growth on his back leg, and I do recommend all abnormal growths be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are benign (non-cancerous) or not. While it could be a cyst, insect bite, or wart, there are certain types of skin cancer (such as mast cell tumors) that can look similar to what you are seeing. I would recommend Marvin see his regular veterinarian and have a needle aspirate to help determine what the growth might be, and determine any further treatment that may be needed. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern! From the pictures you have provided, this appears to be what we call a sebaceous adenoma. This is a benign skin mass that we typically start to see develop in middle aged to older dogs. They do not cause any harm but can become sore and open from time to time. If these masses become infected or are painful I then recommend having them removed, otherwise, monitoring them is absolutely fine to do. I hope this helps! It sounds like you may have attempted to attach a photo to this question but there is nothing here for us to see. If the area is not bothering Coco, I recommend monitoring it for the next few days to see if it changes in size at all. If it remains the same or goes away, this is likely OK. The only way to know exactly what it is, is to have your veterinarian sample cells from this area and examine them under a microscope. I hope this is helpful!

As for the bump, in a senior dog like Brownie, there's always a chance it could be due to malignant tumor. It could also be a cyst, an abscess, or a benign tumor. Any suspicious bumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the bump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Brownie seen by a vet tomorrow to have this bump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated as needed.
