My 8-month Husky has severe hair loss & patches. Why isn't vet medicine working?

Itching on the hind end is most often due to fleas. Check that the tick product you used on Prince covers fleas as well. Also make sure that the product you use will kill fleas at every stage in their life cycle - not just the adult fleas. Keep applying the topical medications prescribed by your veterinarian in case there is a skin infection. If this does not resolve the issue you should go back to your vet for further diagnostics. Since some metabolic diseases can cause hair loss, your vet will want to do blood work as the next step. Allergies can also cause itching and skin infections so speak with your vet about anti-allergy medications.

No, this hair loss does not sound normal and it does not look normal in the picture. Reggie could have a skin infection, fungal infection, or mange among other things causing his hair loss. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. He does need to see a vet to have this diagnose and treated. I recommend giving his vet a call now to make him an appointment. It is difficult to say definitively from your photos, but I am highly suspicious of some bacterial or allergic skin disease going on. He may need treatment with an antibacterial shampoo, or he may need stronger medications such as oral antibiotics or prescription allergy medications. Please see your veterinarian at your earliest convenience to rule out some of these issues & help Prince grow a beautiful coat.

Hello, it looks like Lucky may be shedding his winter coat since it is starting to warm up. If he does have an active skin condition however, look for any sings of itchiness, anxiety, further hair loss, red skin, and scabs. Dogs with skin allergies may also bite and chew at their feet constantly, and environmental allergies are common during this time of the year. If you note any of these, then have lucky seen by his veterinarian as he may need medications. Please also make sure that he has monthly flea and tick control as fleas can also cause severe itchiness and hair loss, especially around his lower back, legs and belly. Oh my, poor Storm! His skin certainly looks irritated and uncomfortable. Since his skin lesions have not responded to several different antibiotics, either this is unlikely to be a bacterial driven skin infection or it is a highly antibiotic resistant infection. Consider asking your vet if diagnostic testing has been performed to rule out contagious causes of hair loss, itching and scaling, such as ringworm or mange. If these possibilities have been ruled out, bigger concerns at this time would be a zinc-responsive dermatosis (most prevalent in Siberian Huskies), immune system skin disorders (such as pemphigus foliaceous), or cutaneous lymphoma. Consider discussing either a skin biopsy with Storm's vet or referral to a veterinary dermatologist as some of the next diagnostic steps. I hope this helps and that he is on the mend soon!

You really should have your vet check this out. The number one reason for hair loss and itchiness in puppies is mange. Of course there are other things that could cause this type of lesion. Those spots on Pedro could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications.
