My husky is losing fur in patches. Is this normal or a health issue?

No, this hair loss does not sound normal and it does not look normal in the picture. Reggie could have a skin infection, fungal infection, or mange among other things causing his hair loss. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. He does need to see a vet to have this diagnose and treated. I recommend giving his vet a call now to make him an appointment. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, this is a very normal thing for Huskies to do! This is called "blowing their coat", and it can take up to 6 weeks for them to shed their undercoat. As I'm sure you are aware, Huskies have a very thick coat of fur, and they typically shed this undercoat as the weather gets warmer to help them better regulate their temperature. It can seem like a huge amount of fur, but it is normal. As long as Bowie is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking, urinating and defecating normally) and he is not getting any bald spots, he is likely just blowing his coat. You may have to brush him fairly regularly during this time to facilitate this shedding. I hope this is helpful!

Hi there! For the most part from the photos it looks like the fur is just changing color, which is ok. What I'd watch for is hair loss and thinning, lesions or pigment changes to the skin, and itchiness of rhe skin - scratching, licking, chewing. It is possible shadow is starting to develop allergies. The most common type are flea, food and environment. However husky breed are prone to zinc deficiencies which affect their coat. I would recommend taking to a veterinarian to assess the skin. I would use flea prevention every 30 days to help with a possible allergy.

I'm sorry but it is difficult to tell anything from the photo. If there are no bald spots present them I am guessing it is normal shedding for that breed of dog. We call it "blowing their coat". Those spots on Pedro could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. You may also try treating him for fleas to see if that helps. You may not always be able to find fleas. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If his skin appears normal otherwise and he is over-all normal, then I would not be worried. I'm not sure if something about the weather this year is different? If his fur does not regrow normally, then get him in for endocrine testing. I hope this helps!
