My Siberian Husky is blowing coat and has face wounds. What's wrong?

Hi there and thank you for your post! Judging from the photos you have provided and seeing that Prince is a young dog, I would suspect demodex mites as the primary cause. Allergies is another possibility but I would have Prince examined by your vet to have the appropriate tests performed (such as a skin scraping to check for mites) to get Prince the most appropriate treatment. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, this is a very normal thing for Huskies to do! This is called "blowing their coat", and it can take up to 6 weeks for them to shed their undercoat. As I'm sure you are aware, Huskies have a very thick coat of fur, and they typically shed this undercoat as the weather gets warmer to help them better regulate their temperature. It can seem like a huge amount of fur, but it is normal. As long as Bowie is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking, urinating and defecating normally) and he is not getting any bald spots, he is likely just blowing his coat. You may have to brush him fairly regularly during this time to facilitate this shedding. I hope this is helpful!

I'm sorry but it is difficult to tell anything from the photo. If there are no bald spots present them I am guessing it is normal shedding for that breed of dog. We call it "blowing their coat". Oh my, poor Storm! His skin certainly looks irritated and uncomfortable. Since his skin lesions have not responded to several different antibiotics, either this is unlikely to be a bacterial driven skin infection or it is a highly antibiotic resistant infection. Consider asking your vet if diagnostic testing has been performed to rule out contagious causes of hair loss, itching and scaling, such as ringworm or mange. If these possibilities have been ruled out, bigger concerns at this time would be a zinc-responsive dermatosis (most prevalent in Siberian Huskies), immune system skin disorders (such as pemphigus foliaceous), or cutaneous lymphoma. Consider discussing either a skin biopsy with Storm's vet or referral to a veterinary dermatologist as some of the next diagnostic steps. I hope this helps and that he is on the mend soon!

Hello, it looks like Lucky may be shedding his winter coat since it is starting to warm up. If he does have an active skin condition however, look for any sings of itchiness, anxiety, further hair loss, red skin, and scabs. Dogs with skin allergies may also bite and chew at their feet constantly, and environmental allergies are common during this time of the year. If you note any of these, then have lucky seen by his veterinarian as he may need medications. Please also make sure that he has monthly flea and tick control as fleas can also cause severe itchiness and hair loss, especially around his lower back, legs and belly. Hello. Definitely not ringworm. Phoenix did obtain a small bite wound & when you pulled the scab off, you revealed the underlying wound. If you could clip the hair a little better around the area, it will be easier to treat. Clean twice daily with a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & apply a triple antibiotic. If it just does not seem to be healing well, you will need to see your veterinarian for further treatment options including antibiotics. No, this hair loss does not sound normal and it does not look normal in the picture. Reggie could have a skin infection, fungal infection, or mange among other things causing his hair loss. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. He does need to see a vet to have this diagnose and treated. I recommend giving his vet a call now to make him an appointment.
