My new shelter Yorkie is hacking. Is it kennel cough or her cleft?

Congratulations on bringing Kaiyah into your household! Yes, it is possible she has kennel cough. The vaccine helps to decrease the strength of the infection in most cases but it may not fully protect. It’s just like how you can still get the flu even though you get the flu vaccine but you don’t usually get us sick. I recommend to call the shelter. They will likely want to see her again or refer you to a veterinarian. There are other causes of coughing as well including allergies. Monitor her very closely for signs of lethargy or not eating. If it does not go away after a week or so, if the cough worsens or she continues throwing up, have her examined by her veterinarian. Heart disease or primary lung disease are also possible but uncommon in a young dog. At home use a humidifier and air purifier if the furnace is running. I would recommend you have Khali evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibility and treat accordingly. Poor Baby! I am sorry she isn't feeling good. The symptoms you have mentioned make me concerned that Baby may have some sort of respiratory issue-kennel cough, pneumonia. I would recommend contacting your regular vet and arrange for her to be seen today. Advise them she has just come from a shelter situation, as repsiratory diseases can be quite contagious. They will likely ask for you to keep Baby in the car until they are ready to bring her into an exam room. Your vet will do a thorough exam, listen to Baby's heart and lungs. They may recommend some diagnostics such as X-rays and bloodwork too. Depending on the issues identified treatment may range (assuming it is a respiratory issue) from oral medications and rest at home, to hospitalization with IV fluids, oxygen therapy and injectable medications. I’m sorry to hear that Lexi isn’t feeling well. A common cause of cough in a young dog could still be kennel cough- it is very contagious and can even be transmitted on your clothes if you touched a contaminated object/person. Other causes although less likely at her age could be tracheal collapse, heartworm, heart disease, pneumonia, etc. I would reach out to your local humane society as they often have discounted care for those who qualify.
