My new dog is coughing. Can she have kennel cough after her vaccine?

Yes, kennel cough is very common and spreads very easily. Pets who receive the vaccine may still get kennel cough (just like people can still get the flu even though they had the vaccine), but they tend to get less sick IF they end up getting the infection. Monitor her very closely for signs of lethargy or not eating. If it does not go away after a week or so, if the cough worsens or she continues throwing up, have her examined by her veterinarian. Heart disease or primary lung disease are also possible but uncommon in a young dog. At home use a humidifier and air purifier if the furnace is running. Even though Harley has had her kennel cough vaccination she can still get kennel cough. Has Harley been to the dog park, day care, kennel or even the groomer? She could have picked it up anywhere there are dogs. If the cough gets worse, isn't eating, has a fever (rectal temperature above 103F) or difficulty breathing it is highly recommended going to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
