My Yorkie is coughing and spitting up clear phlegm. What should I do?

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. Kennel cough is most suspicious if Lexie has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Lexie has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough and runny nose with conditions like distemper, allergies, heart worm, heart disease and lung worm. For this reason, it's best to have Lexie checked out by a veterinarian. They will be able to determine the cause of this and prescribe the appropriate treatment. It's definitely doesn't appear to be an emergency though, so you are safe to wait a day or two to see if it gets better (can happen with some viral diseases). Other possibilities would be kennel cough, pneumonia, allergies, and parasites. Hairballs are pretty uncommon in dogs, though bronchitis is possible if this were an allergic issue - but allergic coughs usually start at a younger age. With such dramatic onset, I definitely recommend having Lace seen by a vet, and anticipate they'll take chest x-rays to evaluate what's going on with her heart and lungs. Hope this helps.

The flu will typically present similar to as it does in people, with a fever, cough, lethargy, inappetance, and often a nasal discharge. It has the potential to progress to pneumonia. There is no specific treatment for the flu, only supportive care and antibiotics if secondary pneumonia develops. I use the rule if a cough does not improve, or worsens, over the course of 48 hours, and is accompanied by lethargy, decreased appetite, difficulty breathing, and vomiting or diarrhea, then the pet should be seen. With the recent outbreaks of Canine Influenza I would certainly try to have him seen by his veterinarian.

The most common reason for nasal congestion, sneezing and reverse sneezing are: allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, or foreign material above the soft palpate. I usually put animals with these symptoms on an antihistamine and an antibiotic. Most of the time that resolves the issue in an otherwise healthy young dog. I would take him to the Vet since it has been going on for several weeks. Good luck!
