Is my dog's gum epulis causing one-sided nasal discharge and sneezing?

I'm so sorry to hear that Spike is having this problem. From your history, it sounds like the nasal discharge started before the dental operation. If that is the case and the dental did not improve the discharge, then it might be time to take some x-rays of the nose and teeth. If there is a tooth that is infected at the root, it may look normal in the mouth, but may have signs of infection on x-rays. That can also cause swelling. The only treatment will be to remove the tooth. Cancer will most commonly cause bleeding instead of just normal nasal discharge, but is always possible. Judging from the pictures, I would be suspicious that this is an abscess / infection or a nasal / sinus tumor. If this is a tumor, it may have developed a secondary infection, which is why it likely responded to the previous treatment. Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you on what this is other than it would need further testing such as rhinoscopy or CT scan to help determine what this could be. If you are unable to do further testing, I would consider continuing the antibiotics / steroids long term to help keep Luna comfortable. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. When dogs have nasal discharge on one side only it indicates a problem in that nostril or sinus. They can get pieces of grass or seeds in their nose that can cause this in addition to a nasal polyp or tumor. This looks infected so I recommend a veterinary exam. They may need to sedate Bowser to flush out and examine in the nostril, the throat and may need an X-ray of his sinus. Often flushing out or removing an object will cure this. If it’s a polyp or mass removing some of it to get a biopsy and diagnosis may be needed. Antibiotics may be prescribed as well for the infection. Nasal discharge can be caused by many different things, including bad dental disease/infected teeth, bacterial or fungal sinus infection, a foreign object in the nasal cavity, or even nasal cancer. Your veterinarian, after performing a physical exam and obtaining the complete medical history, will be able to determine which of these causes are more likely. If a dental procedure and tooth extraction is recommended, your veterinarian will determine whether Spike is healthy to undergo the anesthesia. Just like in humans, anesthetic procedures are not without risk. However, as long as a good physical exam is done and pre-operative bloodwork indicates that he is healthy, he is not at a higher risk than any other dog. Oftentimes dogs vocalize during anesthesia recovery because of the effects of the medications or they are confused. Talk to your veterinarian about this concern and steps can be taken to ensure that he has a safe and minimally stressful recovery.

I am sorry Snoopy is having this issue. It definitely can be a cold but there are other things it can be. It can be allergies or if it is one nostril that there is discharge it can be a growth. I recommend taking Snoopy to the veterinarian and having them listen to her to make sure there is nothing settled in her lungs and it is just an upper respiratory issue. Left nasal cavity seems full of discharge and bone seems affected as well (so whatever is inside is causing bone erosion as well). It is not possible to determine what it is specifically from the CT images and a further investigation is unfortunately needed. Was rhinoscopy performed? was a biopsy taken? Otherwise aggressive treatment for fungal infection is required (not only oral treatment but often ''flush'' of the nasal cavity is necessary to have substantial results. If the nasal discharge continues, especially only on one side, I would be concerned about a possible foreign body in his sinus cavity or even something like cancer. The next step if not already done would be lab test, potential he a CT scan of his skull or/and even a rhinoscopy where we put a camera up his nose to examine for anything. Your veterinarian can determine with you which of those steps would be best suited are even available in your area.
