Why do my two dogs sometimes growl and bark without eye contact?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered

I live in an apartment with another dog and they get along just fine, but sometimes they just stand next to each other without eye contact and start growling at each other until one barks. Why do they do this?

I think they are trying to establish dominance over each other. Both may want to be the Alpha dog. They could also be having a special game or a that time they both want your attention. I suggest they both get neutered. Neutering can decrease dog on dog aggression. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
