Why does my dog avoid my other dog and refuse to play?

It can take a while for dogs to get used to new companions. As long as they are still playing together and not hurting one another I would not be too worried about this behavior. The more they interact together the more quickly they will become used to each other. Just make sure they are always supervised so they don’t hurt each other. I hope this helps. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Some dogs are just less social than others. So it sounds to me like Chaktah just doesn't enjoy playing with other dogs. As long as he's not becoming aggressive around other dogs I would not be concerned.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is very dependent on the dogs in terms of how much they enjoy playing with toys. Some dogs just do not enjoy that and will not play with them as much. You can try to get other toys to see if Ginger becomes interested but ultimately she may decide to not use them and that is not necessarily an issue. Have a good night!

There is nothing wrong with him. Some dogs just don't like to play. You cannot force him. They learn how to play as puppies, it is not instinct. If he only had his brother that he played with then maybe he is the only who he is comfortable playing with. I don't think you should concern yourself with teaching him to play. He may get upset if forced and get aggressive instead.

It can take dogs awhile to get used to each other, and the best thing to do is to make sure hat they each have their own space to retreat to if they don’t feel like interacting. If either one is starting to act aggressive you should separate them. They should have separate water bowls and eat food separately for awhile as well. Even though there haven’t been any injuries yet it would be safest to keep them separate while unsupervised until they are getting along. That being said it can be very normal for dogs to growl during play and sometimes vigorous play can seem similar to fighting. If you’re not sure it might be helpful to talk to a trainer or behaviorist - your vet can make a recommendation.

I think they are trying to establish dominance over each other. Both may want to be the Alpha dog. They could also be having a special game or a that time they both want your attention. It sounds like Grace simply doesn't have much interest in playing or interacting with other dogs, which is perfectly fine - some dogs are very outgoing and love to play with other dogs, while others are more "introverted" and don't have much interest in this. They are all individuals with their own personalities and preferences, just like people :) Dogs like this will often growl or nip at another dog who approaches them and gets in their space, especially if the other dog is somewhat pushy or overly friendly - this is her telling the other dog that she isn't interested in saying hi. This is part of normal canine communication, and is not a problem as long as no one is injured. I would recommend just respecting who she is, and not expecting her to play with other dogs - let her have her space, and keep other dogs from approaching and bothering her if they aren't reading her signals appropriately. She will thank you for it!
