My Chihuahua has a growing black bump on her eyelid. What should I do?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. This will likely require sedation because of the location of the growth. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. Hello, thank you for your question about Chloe. Based on the photos that you've attached and the symptoms that you are describing it sounds like Chloe may have a mass/tumor on her eyelid. These are generally benign and do not lead to systemic problems. Other possible causes include a cyst or local infection. Since this lesion is growing in size I would recommend having Chloe seen by your veterinarian. If it continues to grow it may lead to problems on the surface of her eye. Your veterinarian can examine Chloe and determine the need for diagnostics such as ocular examination and potential removal of this lesion. Hope this helps!

It could even be a growth though thankfully most of the eyelid growths in dogs are benign. I would continue to monitor it for now. If it goes away then great. However, if it does not go away and actually continues to grow, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Those are skin masses. The only way to know if they are cancerous or not would be to surgically remove them and send them to the lab for analysis. Have Rascal examined by your veterinarian so that they can discuss the procedure with you.

It is not uncommon for older dogs to get benign growths on their eyelids. Usually these do not cause much problem. If it continues to grow and his eye is red or has more discharge than normal then I would take him in for an exam. This looks like an infected meibomian cyst. These are common and usually don't cause a problem. If it enlarges or causes excessive tearing or eye irritation then we usually remove them. Do keep an eye on the black spot as sometimes these can become cancerous. From the photo though it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should it change or enlarge please get a veterinary exam. Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Considering how far this appeared and the glistening appearance of this swelling, this appears to be a possible engorged tick. I recommend confirming that suspicion by looking really close for where it comes into contact with the skin to see if you can visualize rhebtick legs. You may have to pull up on the body of the tick a little to see clearly. Then proceed to remove this tick using tweezers or a tick removal kit from your local pet store. There are videos on YouTube that demonstrate how to remove ticks successfully. You want to make sure you grab it close to the skin so that you remove the entire tick head along with the body. Do no place any oils or any chemicals on the tick or this will only agitate it. If you don’t feel comfortable removing it yourself, then take Taco in to your vet for removal. Then discuss with your vet about after care and possible prophylactic treatment with antibiotics to cover any potential tick borne diseases. There is only a slight chance this is a mass, at which point a vet visit is recommended to get samples from it to determine what kind of mass it is and how we should proceed treating it.
